latency - delay when recording audio

Hi - i've tried to search for the answer to this problem but have had no joy - maybe someone can help.

When i record my guitar through amplitube, the recording is always slightly out of sync on playback. I have Ableton 5 and i have turned on the delay compensation, but to no effect. When i adjust the individual track delay, i can get it to sound in time by reducing it to around -0.33ms. What i want to know is, how i can get my guitar to record in time without having to adjust the individual latency on the track itself after the recording? I manage to do it in cubase ok, why not Ableton? Is it something to do with buffers etc? Any help greatly appreciated.

Some more info :
I have a power mac 1.2 ghz G4 with 1.25 gig ram
on the current song , the cpu is around 55-60 percent
Soundcard - M-audio Delta 66

i think the delay compensation may only work if you are not monitoring off that channel. have a look at the manual on this, but unless i'm mistaken, if you turn monitor to 'off' on your guitar track when you record, then the DC will do its thing.
