i used to be a fan of reason, but i never liked the drum machines sounds.. maybe its just me, but they definately didnt have that punch, whereas rebirth is so smooth in the last few days since i got back into it, i've found many of the sounds i'd been after for oh so very long.djadonis206 wrote:Nah dawg - Rebirth and all the propellerhead drum machines kick butt

I don't think Elektron have any "dealers". Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought everything went through them. Small Swedish operation, right? Maybe NovaMusik may carry them but they are in Milwaukee. Not a quick comute. I think Elektron offers a limited time money back guarentee if you are flush enough to drop the $1300 or so...marky wrote:Anyone know where I could audition a Machine Drum in the Boston area ? Right on. I'm using my XL with Live and am having a blast. The basses and pads you can get from these boxes are unreal. The Emu XL-7, MP-7 and the PX-7 Command Stations have a bunch of knobs, you can probably find one pretty cheap on ebay. dont think they sample though. I believe you need an EMu ultra series sampler to transefer samples to it, but then again you didnt mention anything about sampling.
Plus you really can't find a better MIDI controller for Live IMO. This things is built like a tank, relatively cheap and the OS is pretty decent.
As for something newer, I'd maybe get an MPC1000? Too expensive for me tho.

I have always wanted to try using an EMU XL-7 as a midi controller. I thought the design and layout of that machine wer perfect. Perfect blend of knobs and buttons. It even was usb compatable right? Maybe I should revisit that idea... the sounds those boxes produced were really nice too. EMU always had great sounded rack based synths. Too bad they went all interface/soundcard/pc though...

but the thing with Reason is you have to use your own samples - fuck those refills!
What about the Rebirth Refill (Combinator Patches) for REason 3 I find them pretty useful. Any Thoughts?
Does anyone use Rebirth on MAC's OS X Tiger I thought I read that it was only compatible with OS 9?
I just purchased a ELectribe ER1 MK11 Good sounding Modeled Analog drum sounds that can be tweaked . I also use it in conjunction with the Electribe MX1 and BOss DR GRoove 202 and MicroKorg all hooked IN with Ableton MIDI Style incredible.
For the price you can't beat the Electribe series IMHO

kinda surprised nobody mentioned the quasimidi raveolution 309.
http://www.quasimidi309.de.vu/
yeah i know the name is cheesy but that machine is one of the best drum machines ever produced. unfortunetly quasimidi had financial problems and the company went under. but you can still find quasimidi products on ebay. i sold mine a few years ago and still not over it. but i plan to get one again. and don't forget about the jomox x base 09. i personally think its the best drum machine ever! all
analog just like the 909. the machine drum is very nice and sounds good, but i look at it as an electribe on steriods. The kick on it just doesn't even compare to the kick the jomox delivers. this is just my opinion.

Coolest part about using these as a midi controller is that you can play bass lines on the pads, then you have all the knobs, thing would really make a sick midi controller.

I've used all of the drum machines mentioned in this thread, I was the moderator of the XL-7 list, and have had an ER-1 since they came out. If you are serious about wanting a hardware drum machine, then there is no question but to keep saving for the Machinedrum. And yes, you definitely want the UW version, it is most definitely worth the extra $400.
It truly is the most comprehensive and more importantly, the most fun to program and play. It feels like an instrument you can use and perform with, not just program. Seriously keep saving, and then you never have to worry about needing a drum machine ever again. Get one of the other ones and you're always going to be wondering 'what if?"
Took me two years to finally get mine, and it was SOOO worth the wait.
The XX-7's are nice midi controllers, only downside being that they don't have a 'snap' mode. So everytime you change virtual instruments of banks on the XX-7, the knobs no longer reflect the current values they are mapped to. Common issue with non-rendless rotaries though.

I am really curious about "everyone who is everyone" could you throw some names. The only serious user that I know of is james Bernard but well, it is his baby anyway. I like MX but not for studio, with no velocities just "accent" hardly usable, no editor or any sensible options to integrate it with computer.thelike5 wrote:I bought a Korg Electribe EMX1 and it's so much fun to work with. I absolutly love it and both the sunth parts as well as the drums are very, very nice. A lot of people slag the electribes as being a "toy" but belive me, just about everyone who is everyone uses these in the studio.
Biggest "+" fun to use and great live usability (compact, fits to your lappies backpack and can do lots of "noise")
EMU s "+" well bulit, great pads (forget TF), EMU legacy sounds "-" lame sequencer, editing.
It all depend how and for what style you need the machine, Jomox is great so is MD but at double price. Yamaha RS 7000 has the best sequencer, absolutely unmatched for programming beats , usable drum sound s,(the rest of sounds cant match EMU), sampling options.
Yamaha and EMU are very cheap on Ebay. MPCs- contrary , probably the best resale value of any music hardware, buy new or second hand you wont loose more then 100 reselling it.

Steve Bug, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Autechre, John Tejada, Andrew Weatherall, Richie Hawtin, Bright Eyes, New Order to name just a few. As this list points out, the EMX1 is used by such a wide ranging palette of artists which highlights the fact that you can really tweak this machine to produce all sorts of sounds suitable for a lot of different genres of music.
such artists can have extremely expensive channel strips in the studio for exemple, through them those boxes surely sound different than in our project studios, these people have their track professionaly mastered which has a major impact on the sound... saw cabanne live with a korg elektribe and well, it didn't sounded as punchy as on the records, and the club PA is a good one...thelike5 wrote:rikhyray wrote:I am really curious about "everyone who is everyone" could you throw some names. quote]thelike5 wrote:I bought a Korg Electribe EMX1 and it's so much fun to work with. Thanks, now understood. Since I hardly new most of these names quick search shows that they are mostly DJs turned producers not musicians, that makes sense, MX was aimed at people who cant play any instrument yet have lots of ideas and club experience, knowing what audience wants etc etc. and I think it is brilliant at it. Kind of short cut allowing to make/produce genuinly interesting music without previous experience, instrumental skills or any theoretical or practical knowledge of music..
I am not putting Electribes down, neither DJs (study of music nad playing musical instruments does not make anyone better person or better anything but default), just completing the picture, very smart move from Korg side.As long as the results are good who cares how people get there
Anyway did you find some way to integrate MX with Live or with computer in general. Other then recording as audio or transfering midi via card? Will appreciate any suggestions.
