right on, congrats!! I think I saw in the credits that Les Stroud, the Survivorman himself wrote the theme song (he obviously plays harmonica well), so it probably goes without saying that Les also digs your sounds. :D

actually... http://www.lesstroudonline.com/music.html
He digs folk music, so...

Hi Andrew, great work!!

I've downloaded some of your sets and love them. I can't seem to find any of the royalty free samples. I am particularly after field recordings.

I'm also wondering how you work with Ableton Live, Live? any tips, .als, etc?

Thanks

Hi, Nightrider. Glad you like the sets.
The sample zips were moved last week (details below);
there are a mix of sounds in the zips, including field
recordings. When I am working with Ableton Live for something
that has to be an exact length (TV/radio commercial, score
for film, theatre, etc, that sort of thing), I'll go right to
building in arrangement view. But for recording my own
material for non-commercial purposes (ie doesn't need
a specific length because it isn't for a defined commercial
project such as TV, radio, etc; ie it is just a song for
an album or compilation or something like that), I'll just
jam in session view while recording the
results and then go into arrangment view and edit it
down to something I like. Ditto for live performances
(all the live sets on my site, btw, are 100% completely
"as performed" with no overdubs or edits after the fact):
I do my live performances completely in session view
and record them while I'm doing them (in Live, of course :)),
then save the set after the show as a self-contained file.
Then if/when time permits (cos especially after recording
all my live sets on a tour I'm going to have a ton of
long self-contained sets to go through!), I'll go back and see if there
are any potential "songs" in there (cos my live performances
are jams, not duplications or attempted duplications of
already-recorded songs I've done.). If I hear any good bits
(I'm in arrangement view at this point), I'll isolate that
section and see if I can transform it into a song. Thus,
many of my releases (http://andrew-duke.com is my
site and you can click on the album covers to go to
the label site where they often have previews--or full
downloads for my Second Opinion album and Oscar The
Grouch album and 09X90 EP, so lots of full stuff there
too) are the result of a live performance that I "buffed
up" after the fact in arrangement view. Occasionally I'll
get really lucky and a song released onan album or
compilation is taken directly from arrangment view after
recording a live gig in Live and I haven't had to do any
post-production. Always nice when that happens!
Anyway, hope this helps. I'll see about posting some
other stuff, .als, etc if/when time permits.
Take care. Andrew PS Here is the update re: new zips:
A new round of the sound design/production class I'm teaching
(called Making Music With Computers by the college, thus
MMWC for short) starts tonight; I'm making some of my
audio-files-for-manglin' available for these students, too. I'm also
making them available to anyone else who wants to use 'em (links
below). If you missed out on them the first
time I posted (they're royalty-free), here's the download info:
http://andrew-duke.com/MMWCassignment1audio.zip
http://andrew-duke.com/MMWCassignment2audio.zip
(Note: the old zip locations are no longer valid).

Course info: http://andrew-duke.com/course.html

All I ask is that if you use of my samples in anything that you post a link so
we can check out the results.

A production contest of sorts has been set up by one of the members
on the mnml.nl forum using the above samples I made; here's the thread
if you'd like to read more and/or join in:
http://www.mnml.nl/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6802

Happy music-makin'/sound-designin'.

Andrew.

I think I'm going to join that competition on the other website using your samples. I also noticed that you use an M-Audio Microtrack 24/96. I have recently started stocking them in my shop but haven't had the time yet to get out and have a play with it. Any tips for getting started?

It's very easy to use, so once you start playing with it,
you'll get it quickly.
A couple of notes:
you'll need to buy a bigger CompactFlash card
cos the one that comes with it is tiny and doesn't
hold much audio; and make sure you download
all the firmware updates as soon as you start
using it cos the initial batch had issues (since
fixed with the firmware updates).

Re: Survivorman promos

As you know, I do sound design
for others to use and my sounds are
re-used in various areas and I
rarely find out about it unless someone
tells me "hey, I used your sound" or
I happen to hear it used elsewhere.

Well, today I got an email from the guy
who did the audio for the new promos
for Survivorman which airs on TV on
Discovery Science:
http://science.discovery.com/convergenc ... orman.html
The sound designer told me
he really likes my sound design work and
used some of my sound design in a TV promo
for the show. I'm a fan and actually watch
this show regularly, so this has special meaning to me.
How cool is that?! I'll post a link to the promo
on my site if I get permission and
let you know. Wow, I am so thrilled
about this. Take care.

If anybody hasn't seen the Survivorman promos
on TV and want to check one out, go to
http://andrew-duke.com and click on
"promo". It will take you to a page with
a QuickTime movie; wait till it has loaded fully
(30 seconds) and then hit the play button.
Take care.

mp3 results

Post by AndrewDuke » Thu Mar 23, 2006 1:40 am

The mnml.nl forum came up with the idea to do a production contest using
solely royalty-free samples created by lil' me--nothing else--to make a song.

The results are now in; a variety of styles, all top-quality:

original thread with the samples and submissions as they came in:
http://www.mnml.nl/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6802

page with the results listed individually in hi and lo fi mp3 format:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemus ... dID=507522

podcast incorporating all of the results in a super tight mix:

update

Post by AndrewDuke » Mon Apr 17, 2006 4:48 am

In the delerium caused by being under the continuing spell of a wicked case of the flu virus, I
have just made some changes to the free downloads of royalty-free loops I have available:

They are now available as 24bit 48kHz or 16bit 44kHz files, plus the FXlimited zip has been
made re-available (now with more loops; and also as 24bit 48kHz or 16bit 48kHz files);
MMWCassignment1audio is 20 wav files ranging from percussion loops and bass and key
loops to field recording loops and fx loops and hits; MMWCassignment2audio is 30 field
recording and FX loops and hits; the MMWC zips are files I've made for the Making Music
With Computers course on sound design and production I teach at the Nova Scotia Community
College (Institute Of Technology) here in Halifax (http://andrew-duke.com/course.html if you're
interested in finding out more); the newly re-available FXlimited is now *65* field recordings and FX loops and hits. (Bought some extra server space, thus have room for these again). These are free to do with whatever you wish, just please let me know if you use 'em for anything.

If you like the above, please check out: Andrew Duke's Sonic Atmospheres 1
http://www.audiobase.com/product/SACR
This downloadable samplepack contains 606 files (450 loops plus 156 hits) of exclusive
FX material in your choice of AIFF or Apple Loops format.
You can save 25% on this download by plugging the coupon code
abNewsRelease
into the shopping cart when you make your purchase.

Just a reminder to the producers on the list (and anyone who would like to help spread the word):

The deadline for entries in the Andrew Duke--Consumer vs. User remix contest is August 31, 2006--just one month from today.

In case you missed the info first time 'round:
remix material from Andrew Duke's Consumer vs. User album (just
released on California's Phthalo http://www.phthalo.com/cat.php?cat=phth40 and featuring a remix of Phonopsia and two collaborations with Massaccessi) for a chance to be released on Stratagem Musik (http://stratagem-musik.com) and win cool prizes including a grand prize of a copy of Native Instruments Reaktor, plus software from FXpansion and Audiomulch, magazine subscriptions, CD-ROMs (including 2 copies of Brian Jackson's Ableton Live 5 CSi Master), books (including 2 copies of Chad Carrier's Ableton Live 5 Power!), CDs, and more;
http://andrew-duke.com/contests.html has the details.

***And even if you're not interested in participating in the remix contest, there are 385 royalty-free samples available for you to play with in Live.***

Again, contest deadline is August 31, 2006. And there's another remix contest (different source material and prizes) starting up August 15.

Thanks.
