good rhodes plugin?
another huge lounge lizard vote here--it is the shit. AAS delves into digitally re-creating the physical nuances of insturments--LL is not sample based, it pretty faithfully gets the vibe of what makes rhodes so great--the physical vibrations of the tines. I think because of this, it is capable of much more nuance and variety than sample based rhodes vsts....

Here is a HUGE PLEASE DON'T BUY IT for NI elektrik piano.
I have & use NI Elektrik Piano and my only complaint is that it takes
a looooooooooong time to load, as in way longer than my biggest LIVE
session takes to load... not sure how many MB of samples it is loading into
RAM but it must be a lot! its painfully slow....
the best Rhodes in the box would be one extremely well multi-sampled Rhodes.
and the best multi-sampled Rhodes is the Scarbee RSP 73.
I use it with Kontakt 2 in Live.
it CRUSHES all software emulations. and i'm not just blowing smoke.
its available in these formats:
Giga
Kontakt
HALion
EXS24 mk II
since i got the MacBook, i've turned the iMac G5 into a dedicated Scarbee rhodes/wurlitzer box via Kontakt 2. sending digital optical out to the MacBook Pro
you just can't beat the Scarbee short of sitting in front of an 88 stage yourself.

me too. i think its probably cause its freeware and it goes away after you pay. i think.jamesp wrote:I'm getting that "weird noise shit" off of Mr. Ray too. It's a strange endlessly sustained and gradually-getting-louder high Eb. Otherwise, I like the way this Vst sounds. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
i use the EVP73. its great with a tube pre thrown on. i think its legacy too so you may be able to find it for free half way legally.
if youve ever broken tines or tried to tune or had the output on a rhodes go out, youll think a software version is pretty sweet.
That'd be really great, but I kind of doubt it.j0shu@ wrote:me too. i think its probably cause its freeware and it goes away after you pay. i think.
Neither one of the other instruments (Organized Trio or Mr Tramp) have that kind of a kludge built-in. And the GUI already has a "nag" badge. Still, if 40 USD would fix the problem, sign me up!
Anybody Know for sure?
Weird - been using these plugs for a while and never had any issues like you guys have described...is the MrRay or the '73 your using?jamesp wrote: That'd be really great, but I kind of doubt it. OT: Dunno if it's your bag but Ziokiller's also working on some trumpet and sax physical modelling VSTi's that sound jaw-dropping. Jazz per se ain't really my thing - but heavily distorted sax rocks
if you plan on using it live i wouldnt mess with gigastudio. its a beast from what i can tell. i have heard favorable mention of the sounds in teh nord stage though.
id always assumed that was the problem with the mr ray, that it went along with that nag screen.
i use mr tramp and mr donald and they dont seem to have that limitation....
i guess it might be a bug, and i have certainly experienced it. i just removed it cause it seemed worthless after that.

Oh yeah......the samples are BEAUTIFUL, but you are right about the loading.subbasshead wrote:Here is a HUGE PLEASE DON'T BUY IT for NI elektrik piano.

btw.....do you use the directfrom disc? If not, it really helps.
SCARBEE
here's a track i started with Kevin Anker sometime last year.
we haven't gotten around to finishing it, but this has the dry Scarbee RSP '73 Rhodes track in it. Kevin played the Scarbee via Kontakt 2, in Live 5 on my iMac G5 1.8ghz.
i may have added a touch of AUMatrixReverb on it in the mix.
there's also some little organ bits in there, those were from the USB Charlie plug-in.
which does a decent organ, not my fave, but it got the job done.
anyways, this really showcases the Scarbee RSP '73, and Kevin's playing for that matter...
if my memory is correct, i rendered it in the hi-cut, 8 velocity mode.

and the hammer attack was incredibly synthetic, no matter how i tweaked it.
if you know how the non Fender-badged Rhodes sound with the plastic hammers, compared to the Fender-badged Rhodes... to my ears LL was like using reaalllllly cheap plastic hammers.
no bueno.
and you are right, a sample is a sample.
but the Scarbee library is freaking H U G E.
and it captures the Rhodes better than any synthesis ever will.
if you want a unique vibey sound that is kinda rhodes'y - LL is cool.
if you want to put the sound of an actual Fender Rhodes in your music without hauling in a stage or suitcase - Scarbee will get you there better than any other option.
Nord Electro is a close 2nd.
I think one thing that makes what you are saying somewhat right is that when you are playing a real deal full-blown rhodes, you are playing through tube amp driven stereo speakers with very loud possible volumes and a huge sound. Thus, even a great vst rhodes played through 5" studio monitors is nowhere near the same sonic experience...however, by the time you work something into a mix that will be played on conventional stereo systems, I think good plugins like LL can be much more in the 70-90% range of realism when its all said and done. No one here is saying that vsts sound better or that they'd rather play a vst than the real thing, that much is for sure.snowtires wrote:i gotta say, as a rhodes player (i.e. actual rhodes), none of these even come close and definitely none of them sound 99.8% like the real thing. i'd say it's closer to about 25%.
