this is the first time there's an update since I'm using live and I'm not sure whether I need to uninstall the old version of live and then install 5.2 or just run the setup over the old installation (more like a patch).
I don't wanna mess up my system with unnecessary multiple installations, but on the other hand I don't want to have to reconfigure everything etc....

It is totally fine to leave the older version of Live on your computer, or to uninstall it. Each update is a new full install.
That said, you should first install the new version and run it once, as it will get the preferences file and the unlock information from the previous version. Then, you can uninstall the oldest version.
