[live 5.2] latency settings

Post by geoffroy » Mon Apr 10, 2006 8:10 pm

Hi there

Isn't there any problem with Live 5.2 latency settings ?

Image

In and out latencies are not the same but they should, aren't they ?

best

Hi geoffroy,

No, in and out latencies can be the same but they must not be the same.
These values also come from the audio driver and are totally related to the audio interface. So Live does not "create" these values.

My Behringer BCA has completely different latencies and its never caused me no bother. If its not making things sound crap then ignore it.... there are bigger, buggier things to worry about!!!

No, input and output latencies are totally different concepts, they don't have to match necessarily....
The input latency refers to the time it takes for the audio from the input (line in, mike, etc) to reach the application. The output latency is the time it takes for audio from the application to reach your speakers.
Typicaly input latency is perceived as a "delay" between the original outside source (e.g guitar playing live) and its reproduction withing the software. Output latency is perceived as a "lag" between the triggering of an event in the digital domain (midi note, start/stop, clip triggering) and its acoustic reproduction.
Latency is not a feature of Live. It depends solely on your soundcards input/output buffer settings and the sample rate chosen. There is a tradeoff between smooth reproduction/latency though, so the best setting is the one that allows for minimum latency without clicks/pops.
But I think I am straying off the subject. So lets leave it here.

so how can we change these latencies when live doesnt let you change them, the only adjustments i can make with DMX6fire is the buffer size on my card mixer and the compensation box thing (the one thats 0.00ms in that picture, dont know the name off hand)?

I input a negative number into that compensation box to offset the latency and bring it to zero(0). In your example I would type in -9.80 Am I doing this right btw? Should I even worry about that? :?
