I ordered Live on January 24th 2006 from a legitimate online distributor to run on my recently ordered Mac Book Pro.
This arrived in a shrink wrapped box and was a fully legitimate, new version.
I entered the given serial number and unlocked the product without any problems.
However when I e-mailed Orders at Ableton this week to get my free update serial number, they refused saying that that serial number had been unlocked on December 23rd last year.
I'm trying to chase it with them, but just get e-mails back telling me I unlocked it on December 23rd 2005, so am outwith the free update offer.
I've forwarded the invoice showing I didn't order it until Jan 24 this year, but I'm now in a rut as my queries just get the reply that it was unlocked on Dec 23.
So my query is, does anyone know how this could have been unlocked a full month before I bought it? Are there Live Keygen programs that could have chanced on my serial number?
I know I could just stump up for the upgrade and reclaim it against Live 6, but don't see why I should pay money now for something that I am due for nothing.
This isn't a rant against Ableton - I don't think they would lie to me just to save an upgrade fee - but currently there's a standoff with them insisting I unlocked it on Dec 23rd and me saying I didn't order it until Jan 24th 2006 - and in the meantime I can't use the s/w on my MBP!
All suggestions as to how this could have happened welcome!
5.2 Serial Number Strangeness
A similar thing happened to me with Reaktor. I bought it, took it home, and found that someone else had already registered it. The music store contacted NI, and eventually their database was reset so I could register the software in my name, just before the 30 day trial period you get after installing Reaktor was to expire. Maybe you should get the distributor involved somehow....
