I would like to formally suggest we turn this into a computer-musician-feeling-insecure-about-his-or-her-own-talent-so-he-engages-in-some-trivial-semantical-debate-on-the-merits-of-musical-talent-when-someone-suggests-it-takes-more-talent-to-play-a-piano.

May I have an Amen?

Playing chopsticks does not a musician make, fewl.

are you serious ? fuck chopsticks, i'm talkin about chopin. obviously composition is also implied in the original statement....someone can program chopsticks, but cant play it on a piano or keyboard. the other can play it on a piano or keyboard. the other is more talented. end of discussion.

Who do you think wrote it?? Why do you think it's called "chop"sticks??

heheh

Anyway, ppl said the same thing about the electric bass and guiter when they were introduced, not to mention the theramin et al etal.

My dad used to take piano lessons and play Chopin. Big f'in deal. I'd put him in the same category as a mediocre dj - entertaining, but no different in terms of talent for regurgitating music.

These convos are pretty dumb, I'll grant you. But for the love of god, you sound like the folks at the turn of the last century saying photography wasn't art like painting was.

yep, the theramin sure is up there with the guitar, i can see why you'd group the two together. i'm sure your dad would love to hear how highly you think of him.

Ah, but who is more talented: someone who could write something like Chopin, but couldn't play it. Or someone who could play something like Chopin, but couldn't write it. I reckon the writer has more musical talent, but clearly the player has more physical talent.

chopin wrote chopsticks ? heh, no shit
I just saw that snowtire's comment was going to be taken out of context ... and turn into a tired discussion with no conclusive answer, basically a carousel of meaningless words that never ends, .... with people claiming eliteism, and ignorance....and on and on ....

truth is, there is more physical talent involved in actually playing something live, note for note - no quantisation

thats all snowtires meant, and i agree completely.

I don't know if you have ever seen someone trained in using the theramin, but it is pretty amazing. I'm not talking Jimmy Page either. The inventor's daughter was an expert at playing it, people even wrote pieces specifically for theramin.

and then there's the school of musicians like myself, who think if you can't write music, you aren't a musician. you're just a player. and if you can't play something you wrote? come on. i mean, ok maybe you're not going to be able to play every string instrument known to man, but if you can't plan an instrumental representation of what you just wrote, you're not a musician either.

of course, but assuming the compositional level is the same in both people...the addition of physical talent tips the scale in the broader sense of the word talent..

yeah, but the theramin is a very limited instrument in terms of use in an orchestration. you compared it to the electric guitar, as if the two were interchangable. i think i know one band with a theramin player, and they suck. theramin virtuosos are about as in demand as musical saw players.

You took it out of context. Read it again and understand.

lol

a guitar has those handy things called frets ...so you can see where to put your finger(s) .....a theramin ....man .....good luck trying to play 'bah bah blacksheep' on that . I'd like one someday, to use for making CV control data...I doubt I'd devote the immense amount of time it would take to play something meaningful with it
