I'll ignore all the frivolous oil and money talk here and concentrate on this weighty issueultrasource wrote:hey hambone,
did you lose your accent and gain a british accent? cause i just saw an interview with madonna and she sounds more british than american. or is she just that pretentious?
Indeed the woman speaks with a weird cod-english accent WTF. It's one step up from dick van-dyke, but still pretty lame.
But it's hard to complain much when 90% of English acts sing with an American accent, I hate that.
If anyone needs to know anything about why the US of A gets a hard time you should ponder the rest of us sad fucks doomed to listen to C&W bands from Burnley singin "yeaaah bayybeh, ahma gonna gitchew tonite!!" then coming off stage and saying "ey it were reet up on yon sterge tnaaart"
thats where the cultural imperialism bites.
meanwhile back on topic
I cannot understand the weird reasons why we supposedly are allowed to have stupidly high petrol prices. delivering scooters .. what?
we pay 91 p per litre , 61 p of which is tax !!!!!
in gallons - we pay $4 of tax on a $7 gallon.
the fucking government must really hate scooter delivery.
I think you'll find that the US has some of the cheapest petrol in the developed world http://www.see-search.com/business/fuel ... europe.htm
If you think we haven't protested against this?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/924574.stm
the country stopped, there was hardly a car on the road after this week in 2000.
funny though, that poster in the article "this is only the start of things to come, give in mr blair" - that was sept 2000 - nearly 6 years ago!Angstrom wrote: If you think we haven't protested against this?

if my memory serves me petrol was closer to 80p, even high 70s in 2000
fat lot of good that protest did
but it's alright because it was the war in Iraq wot dunnit!
saying that out loud - over 10p a litre rise in just 6 years????!!!
there is just no justification for that when 60% is tax. Unbelievable.
Then for public transport - I remember sitting on a great eastern train into london, going to work everyday was costing me £300 a month which made my blood boil every single day. If there were holidays and I couldnt get a monthly or weekly it would be £20 a day - for a 35 minute train trip!!
Then one day I picked up the Metro and there was an article in there saying "a government minister today has said the British public are vastly UNDER charged for train fares"
That moment when I read that is the closest I ever came to going on a murderous rampaging mass killing spree.

I haven't finished reading the rest of this thread yet, but damn that was a powerful statement forge!
I have my suspicions about that first protest - it was all way too easy. Not sure if you know what happened when they tried for a second one - it just 'didn't happen' in sept 2005.forge wrote:funny though, that poster in the article "this is only the start of things to come, give in mr blair" - that was sept 2000 - nearly 6 years ago!Angstrom wrote: If you think we haven't protested against this?

The first one (2000) could have been stopped easily, the protesters weren't THAT aggressive
The country totally went to fucking shit in those 8 days it was instant armagedon with shops sold out of food, panic buying and a weird sense of madmax 'anything could happen'bbc wrote:Although the protesters are not actively preventing tanker drivers from leaving the refineries, the vehicles stand idle and empty.
Some drivers say they are reluctant to cross the unofficial picket lines, but in the main, oil companies instruct them to stay put - apparently out of concern for their safety.
so why did they let it continue?
It must be that our government loves a legitimate protest, the oil companies didn't want any money that week and that the police just don't know how to break up a few farmers and lorry drivers drinking tea and chatting.
must have been that, because there's no sense in a government 'letting it happen'as some kind of 'war game' , 'what if' scenario ? nah, too far fetched that one. I am in no way suggesting that. nope not at all.
sorry , it was late - and I was responding to the irony of the fact that here is a thread where someone is willing to take a stand over high fuel prices, and I do wonder how many of the people gettting in on it did their bit to get him out....I mean he's still there isnt he? I refuse to believe that many people voted FOR him, it has to be not enough voted against......smutek wrote:Oh wow.....forge wrote:not enough Americans could actually be arsed to go and vote in the "keep GWB from getting another term" election that was a begging plea from the rest of the world to get rid of him - that was too much effort, so maybe a bit more effort at election time and you wouldnt be whinging about it now

there's a comedy show here in Oz where they have guest's on from all over and they had this American Comic - not sure his name - but they asked him "there was a survey xx% of Australians have a negative view of America" or something like that, asking him what he thought - he went on this pretty funny, but quite arrogant rant about how Americans couldnt care less about what Australians think and they dont have some poll about what they think of Australia etc then he went on and started saying "I mean is it true you guys get fined $100 if you dont vote??" and one of the Australian comics said "Yeah but you get George Bush"
I thought that was a nice summing up
seriously though, it would be the same here, if Australians werent fined for not voting hardly any young people would vote, and, Like america it would probably be the more conservative types that did - as it is we some how got these arseholes in office - but that's mostly lack of opposition...
unless it was just that everyone - including police etc actually agreed it was just too much of a piss take - people do travel these days, quite alot go to America and so it's not exactly uncommon knowledge how much of a rip off it is!Angstrom wrote: so why did they let it continue?

ok cool, you know how it is with text on a screen - never sure if you cause offense...smutek wrote:Well, when I said powerfull I meant it as in I totally agree and respect the statement. Just to clarify or whatever.
I voted, but I really don't think it mattered. I think the elections were rigged to be honest, but that another topic alltogether.
I totally wouldnt put it past the powers that be to rig elections, and I'm a bit of a subscriber to the idea that the true power on this earth is beyond governments and national borders
but then again, even going by the rows you get on our little Ableton board now and then, there are actually people out there who swallow it all and buy into the whole rhetoric of the Bush/neo con thing - it really blows my mind but whenever these debates come up there's always a surprising number who chime in - so if people are that easy to manipulate then there could well be enough to tip the balance - really alot of the anti-establishment types are probably more likely to be of the "they're all bastards I'm not voting for anyone" persuasion, and that ironically makes it easier for people like Bush....
Who knows? certainly not us, the only people that really know arent going to tell us either.

...the oil companies only actually make around 10 cents a gallon.
If you really want lower gas prices ask your state to drop their taxes, or OPEC to drop their gas prices. A boycott won't hurt the oil company, and you shouldn't want to anyway.

The oil companies may only make 10 cents a gallon, but they are the only business in the world that makes profits (over a trillion a year combined) when everone else has to cut back or take a cut when things get though.
As far as presidents go, there has never been one that "isn't" the problem. At 41, I've been through a bunch of em already, and they have never been universally liked. In fact, quite the opposite.
I also hate people who have fake accents. That in turn makes me hate myself since I developed an "accent" living in texas for a while. People are sponges, they absorb. Unless of course, it's peace and respect, in which case "they" will never learn.
And since I'm on a bitch kick, how is it that I gotta wait until october for STARGATE/ATLANTIS/BATTLESTAR GALACTICA to get new episodes.......WTF? After 9 lousy episodes I have to wait THAT long to see what happened to the Ori?
What is the world comming to.............

I just bought a Nissan Pathfinder. I own my own painting and Venetian Plaster outfit, my other vehicle is a van. Anything I own has to be able to carry 60 gallons of paint, and a few ladders.
I used to be that person that thought anybody with a SUV was a waster, but in Seattle were it rains all the time, it's basically a truck with a canopy to me. I need backup, I'm not about to buy a new vehicle, and I can't be not showing up for work, others depend on me.
It is annoying that people buy them because they like to feel manly etc. but it's definitely annoying that certain people will think I'm a waster because others drive SUV's for the wrong reasons.
I wish Seattle had the sort of public transportation that London has, that would be really cool.
Peak oil is real, oil companies are using it to price gouge, and the reason nothing else is being developed is simple. Things like bio diesel etc. once mass marketed would be hard to justify the sort of profit margins that the oil companies can get from a product me and you simply cannot get to. I can make bio diesel in my back yard, I can make alcohol, electricity etc. but oil, I have to buy.

...but how much of that profit is gross, and how much is net? Why should we fault them for making money providing something we all want? If there was no demand, then they wouldn't make a dime.eyeknow wrote:The oil companies may only make 10 cents a gallon, but they are the only business in the world that makes profits (over a trillion a year combined) when everone else has to cut back or take a cut when things get though.
