multiple outputs

Post by bredhead » Sun Apr 16, 2006 11:21 am

i would like to output about 20 different tracks to seperate speakers (not just to standard stereo), could be 20 mono or 10 stereo, may use LIVE or another program. Would i use a mixer or something like a firewire external box (saw an m-audio thing M Audio Firewire 410 4-in/10-out Firewire Interface).
On a mac 10.4.6
I have no real experience in sound, its for an art piece. can anyone help and give me some advice?
Thank you

Simon

this is shaping up to be a spendy piece of art. that's a lot of outputs, not to mention speakers and amplifiers!

watch specs closely, you might see a large number of outputs but 8 of them will actually be ADAT optical... at this level of gear, they're going to be talking about mono outputs.

have a look at MOTU 24I/O , about $1500

you might consider getting two aardvark q10's. the company does not exist anymore so there is no official support. that's the scary part. there are OSX drivers, but you might have to roll back a little bit, i'm not sure. you could probably get one on ebay for between 300-400 dollars. there is a user-maintained support page: http://aardvark.ne1.net/
