hello,

i too have had this problem, rending to disk and the final result full of clips, etc. i wrote to ableton support and we worked out the simplest solution is to lower the master gain... seemed to do the trick, despite a compressor and limiter over the entire mix to maintain output levels at 0db.

as some have suggested, perhaps there is a deeper problem as i've never had to this with cubase, for instance.

at first i thought "normalise" was permanently on, but i have since discovered that "make loop", whether one turns it off or not, is always on... i run Live on a PC/Win2K. every render is rendered out as a loop!

I thought the rendering problems were just on macs. Render as loop and normalize are options in the rendering dialog box--I use neither. Of course your master can't be at 0.0 dB with a bunch of Live clips running through it--that would be snap, crackle and pop rendering. I find that with a handful of well recorded clips (i.e. not peaking out but damn close) and no master comp/limiter, the master fader needs to be right about in the middle to avoid digital clipping. Converting to mono automatically adds 3.8 dB due to the summing of the stereo. Make sure your track faders are at 0.0 dB, and just do playback through the song before rendering--make sure None of the tracks or especially the master are EVER going into the red. On my setup, I often don't hear the clipping into the red on my monitors on initial playback, but definitely hear and see it when rendering--if you make sure your not in the red on playback, the rendering should be fine. PC, XP Pro, rendering works great, you just have to set the levels of the faders appropriately. This thread is about macs clipping the rendered signal in wierd places when there is absolutely no clipping or going into the red on playback with appropriately set faders---what, macs aren't all people say they are, oh my!

TRY THIS

Post by dpel » Tue Oct 21, 2003 9:21 pm

this might blow all current hypothesis regarding the clicks and pops...

test:

turn off all green speaker icons except 2 or 3
(choose a pad, some percussion and a bass whatever)
make sure the individual track faders and meters aren't cliping
then render.

results?

i still get clicks

pfff,

Clicks and pops in rendered output

Post by rasputin » Wed Oct 22, 2003 8:32 pm

That's pretty serious for so small a test. I have to think that even
though there might be a bug in Live, it must be somehow related
to your system, at least in part. This because many people are
doing renders without apparent problems.

On my system I have not yet experienced the problem. My tracks
are not gigantic; most are 3 - 5 minutes and perhaps 6 or 7
stereo clips playing at once, and a handful of effects.

I'm running a 2.0GHz P4 with 768 MB RAM, Win 2000, and two
60 GB UDMA66 hard disks. The sound card is an Echo MIA (PCI).

I know a lot of Live users are working on laptops. Do you think it's
possible that even though the overload indicators are not showing
it, the speed of the laptop drive and busses are causing a problem?
Possibly the sound card? (I believe that even though the sound
card does not play during the render, its software and hardware
are required to do the render.)

To me a good test would be to take a set that definitely clips
when rendering, and move it to another PC and try it again.
Ideally running the same OS...

If your set is really that small, can you upload it to an ftp site
somewhere and let other people try to render it?

Hello everybody,

yes, that seems to be a bug in Live. We'll try to fix it asap. However, I didn't manage to reproduce it here so far, so I would be glad if you could help me.

Anyone who experiences that problem, could you please send me a small, self-contained Live set that produces clicks etc when rendered? Please include:
- The Live set together with all sample/analysis files
- The audio file that results from rendering.
- Your rendering settings
- Your system configuration (platform, memory, OS, sound interface)

Please use as few samples/clips/tracks/effects as possible, just as many are needed to produce the clicks. That keeps the whole thing smaller and easier for me to investigate.

Many thanks
