Ableton Tutorials

Post by Ronan_Mc_Killop » Wed Apr 19, 2006 9:37 pm

Where might be the best place one might learn to use ableton? I have already used it a bit and really just want to learn more. I know they are all over the place but was wondering is there any particular places i should check out. cheers in advance, ro.

and do u not think it would be more useful for someone else to show me it instead of me having to do the same. a) it would be faster b) it would be easier.

The Live tutorial DVD is pretty nate although theres a dodgy cheesemeister woman that intros each scene otherwise well worth an investment.

hehe! but its only fair that you read the manual cover-to-cover, cos 99 times out of 100 everything is covered there, and in the lessons. Plus you got to remember that 'someone' you talk about has done the legwork to gain the knowledge you seek, and plus put the effort in to make the tutorial for you .... if you look at the tutorial's you seek as a SEED, and your brain as the SOIL , then it makes sense to read the manual cover-to-cover in order to enrich your SOIL with valuable nutrients so that the SEEDS you plant will grow healthy and strong.

course you can plant a seed in some random soil without the nourishment of nutrients and it will grow into a plant, but only a fraction of the plant it could be.

Have you done the tutorials that come included with the program? There are several there.

I know everybody is saying read the manual and you're against it but, y'know, I've gotta recommend the manual too.

It's really well written (amusing in places too) and taught me alot about Live and gave me useful ideas.

Tell you what;

go to bed early tonight, spend an hour or so reading the manual, go to sleep and then give Live a try in the morning.

Don't miss out on the wonderful manual ;) :D

Step 1: Go through the ableton tutorial videos. Do everything they do, and any part that makes no sense- write down on an sheet of word for word, or as close as you can get. This way if you skip it "you come back to it." Words can not describe how effective their videos are.

Step 2: Go through each and every tutorial. Do everything they say. If you don't understand something, learn how to find it on your own, either through the manual or through google, wikepedia, etc. I would strongly go through the operator tutorials as well. The device itself is very didactic...

("didactic
One entry found for didactic.
Main Entry: di·dac·tic
Pronunciation: dI-'dak-tik, d&-
Function: adjective
Etymology: Greek didaktikos, from didaskein to teach
1 a : designed or intended to teach b : intended to convey instruction and information as well as pleasure and entertainment" - m-w.com)

Between the thought-out tutorials and the design of the device, yu can learn a lot about synthesis as well as the deeper routing features of Live...

Which brings me to step 3: Read every trick in hoffman2k's trick thread/stickie.
This will make you really cool and woman who meet you at clubs that aren't really into you for your mind will let you babble on endlessly about these. Also, if you start talking aboout them at family get-togethers you will find yourself bonding with different family members. OK, just ignore this paragraph, I just got a "magic Bullet" and drank too many smoothies- but really, I am not kidding you- reading this assmbelage of creative, intelligent applications will make DJ'ing in live seema as easy and boring as killing ants with a magnifying glass. Pretty soon you will be creating mediated feedback loops that robotically pet cats but whose tap-tempo is controlled by their purrs (this would be an example of bad application of positve feedback loop...)

4) At this point, or perhaps after step 3, you should feel compelled to read the manual. Wether or not you do decides your fate or class in countless quantum universes. It is easier to read this book than to smoke ten cigarettes in a row. It is easier to read this book than to pay your bills on time. It is easier to read this book than to cut class- all provided you actually really want to learn this software, and not just up to the point that your getting orally pleasured by some feeble-minded trailer-trash because "you" successfully mashed up mike jones with the theme to fraggle rock.

I deserve to go to hell. I wrote this post when I should have been reurning ghostbusters. Reading the manual is easier thanstaying on your girlfriends good side.
