scale midi plug for dummies?

Post by kipling » Thu Apr 20, 2006 5:05 pm

hello folks.

i just wanted someone to try to clarify exactly how the scale midi plugin works. my whole confusion about the way you enter a scale has to do with the grid. those dark squares...are they just there for reference, or do they actually represent the black keys, like you find on a keyboard?

so you have columns going up and down, and rows going side to side. if i have the bass as being "c" and the lowest "c-2", then when a midi note of "c" comes in, and i have the lowest left square "on," then it means that a "c" will play when a "c" note-on comes in.

the next column is then for "c#," so if i make the second column from the left, second row from the bottom "on," then if a "c#" note-on comes in, a "c#" will play?

the next column is then for "d," so if i make the third column from the left, third row from the bottom "on," then if a "d" note-on comes in, a "d" will play?

then next columns then proceed as "d#, e, f, f#, g, g#, a, a#"?

that makes 12 columns. what would the 13th row be for?

i think if i get this clear, then i could post some additional scale presets to the "Link your presets" forum that hoffman2k set up. he has a nice collection of additional scale and chord presets listed for download there. i have a book by yusef lateef called "repository of scales and melodic patterns that has a lot of unusual exotic scales.

thanks for any help!

Yea, you are right to assume that the black blocks are the black notes.

The 13th row is the C of the next octave if your root key is C.
