I wasn't alive, but 1972. So many people had breakthroughs in that year, some of them more than once. From Kraftwerk to Bowie to Funkadelic to Can to all the unheard inventions going down in the early hip hop scene, it's just crazy. People around the world were knocking themselves out that year. Old styles and new styles were all still alive and trying to evolve.

i totally agree, 83-84 was a pinnacle for the "80's" electro sound, whether hip-hop, latin (listen to "yo little brother" by NOLAN THOMAS, CLOSE (to the edit) by art of noise, Arthur Baker remixes, Planet Rock, Madonna's first album, SURVIVAL RECORDS, etc. etc. Skinny Puppy Remission, etc etc etc...my memories of that summer were chiiling at the pool (like every day!!!! a hot summer) and the beach at Ocean City Maryland, electro was blasting out of boomboxes everywhere you went. They actually played GOOD music on the radio for a short minute back then!!!! Didn't last long tho.Brittney Sparse wrote:Shit! I was just thinking about this today.
It's really 2 different years.
1984 - not a single bad album came out then in the music I like. Amazing.
1996 - I was thinking about sitting in one of my old houses (i.e., not like I got many but an odl apartment. Why not tsay that then? because it's been a long day) in 1996 and having Orbital's "The Box", Spaceheads S/T, Autechre's Tri Repetae, Panasonic's Kulma and Sterolab's Emperor Tomato ketchup all surrounding me and being amazed by all this awesome music.
I also agree with you on 96 being a great year, TECHSTEP was born thanx to TRACE and ED RUSH, Lots of progression in the Detroit Techno sound.....an amazing vibe all around that year at every party I went to and just in general it was a great fucking year.
I will add two more years: 1991 and 2001/2002 for obvious reasons if you were around at the time....91 is the year techno blew up here in the USA, and 2002 is the year electro solidified it's comeback with so many great releases, as well as a lot of great techno. 2006 is looking quite mediocre already......we'll see.....I don't expect much anymore...i think the best years for music are really past.
