only 20 clips in a tracK???

Post by doe » Fri Apr 21, 2006 1:22 pm

hi,
is it right that a track in live can only contain 20 clips?
thats really not enough, why is it limitet?
otherwise i could build my sets i a way that makes sence,
that i dont have to think all the time which clip to trigger next,
as i am already busy with tweaking effects cutoff filters....

man it isn't limited to 20, if you select a number of tracks together and copy them into the 20 clip you will see the number of tracks expand

You can also insert additional scenes, it's explained in your manual.

When I started out, I used to think this too. Somehow, I overlooked that part in the manual. :D

i have another question...
when i click on start in the master track to start a whole scene, is it possible that one track of the scene doesnt start its clip?
i mean the track has to be turned on but the clip its containing doesnt start, so i can start it manually later without have to turn it on, understand?

@martin808 then tell me?
as you know i dont own live yet, just want to know what is possible.

and what about linking?
is it possible to link track 1 with track2, so that when i trigger a clip in track 1 also the responding clip in track 2 is triggered automatically?
you know, i have a kickdrum on track 1 and all other drums on track 2,
so i can add a delay or reverb to track2, what i cannot do when the are in the same track, cause heavy ping pong delay on kickdrum sounds crappy..
but on toms perfect.
so thats what i need, but without recording automation, i need it in the session view for playing live..
so if my two questions are possibly to be solved, please tell me and i will have bought ableton live about yesterday

All of this stuff is possible... Triggering scenes (the far right hand colomn in session view) enables you to trigger multiple clips (in a row) at the same time. Then you can 'remove' stop buttons from slots you don't want to trigger other slots. you should really download the demo and have a look at the in-built tutorials... they cover all this stuff..

ye man your right, excuse me for perhaps spamming this board, but im at work now, demo is home, and i cant get the question out of my head..
so you say when the stop buttons are removed those clips arent affected when i trigger a whole scene in master track ima try this..
what about linking two channels? you know that?
and again sorry for perhaps spamming ima little bit impatient, too much coffee

doesnt work man, doesnt work.
maybe its my problem.
had a scene full of clips, 8 tracks everyone was containing one clip, removed stop buttons, BUT all clips in the scene launched.
so what im doing wrong?
maybe as you all own live just try it and tell me if it works
thanks in advance

you haven't understood what scenes are for.

if you want to launch several clips together, put them in a row (scene).

don't put any clips on that row that you don't want to launch with the others.

deleting stop buttons is for when you don't want the blank spots on the row to stop other clips on their channel, when the scene is launched.

if you want to launch things in different combinations, copy and paste your clips around. it doesn't copy the audio just the clip info. sadly there's no way to clone clips but you don't really need it, it doesn't take a moment to c&p.

so, every scene is a collection of clips that launch together. clips can appear in multiple scenes. hth hand.

oh and for your first question, i think maybe some of the lightweight versions of live that come free with controllers are limited to 20 scenes

alright, thats ok, like i thought it isnt possible, unlike people said here.
just think this would be very useful for the kinda music i make.
okok last question, follow actions, follow actions can only be set in one track?
it is not possible that the follow action of one clip is: launch next scene?
i mena complete scene?
am i right?

i think that may be possible by using some additonal programs. by installing a midi loopback program such as midiyoke (or using IAC on mac) then it is possible to use clips to contain midi information which can be used to control the program.

therefore you could have a clip on some track which would fire a note that would in turn launch a scene.

for more on this kind of stuff, search for "dummy clips"
