That works but I have a problem like this

say I've done a bunch of volume automation then I eralise the whole track needs to be turned down

I touch the fader and all automation goes grey - then I hit the red button and everything returns to the way it was before I turned the overall volume down

Create a dummy midi track... copy the entire envelope to the new midi track, and you should be able to do whatever you want to the original track, and copy and paste parts of the envelope back and forth, and still have a copy of the original envelope..

there's is no envelope mute... just lock envelope, which has no bearing on what you're trying to do.

I have been pushing HARD for a seperate record button for automation - keep it seperate - I'm always wanting to record the sequence but not automation and vice versa

Another suggestion I've been pushing for is a modifier key to momentarily bypass record while you twaek - so for the problem Adonis just mentioned (which drives me crazy almost daily) you should be able to hold CTRL while you change the level and have it not recorded - even better would be another modifier as well so you could hold ALT while it's not recording and have it temporarily record JUST THAT parameter - so like a temp record button that just records the next thing you tweak

That's caused me to hurt my toes a couple of times.

The other thing that gets me is in arrange view.
there should be a select envelope only so if you hit the delete key it doesn't cut the clip behind it. It would be so cool to have it act like cel animation where you could erase or draw one layer without effecting the others.

I thought CTRL+ delete did that?

You could very well be right and it's one of the many things that I have overlooked in Live (yes I read the manual but I have ADD)

I blush

So if I want the ability to bypass automation, then I'm using the wrong host? This seems like such a simple feature, and for a program designed for live use it seems almost essential to me.

actually there seem to be lots of things missing from the manual - probably due for an overhaul!

just a couple other ideas for after the fact overall volume reduction:

clip gain, if it's all one clip

or

utility plugin with gain adjustment made there.

Drag select the area of automation where you'd like to lower the overall volume, click, hold and drag up/down between automation nodes and you can change whole chunks of envelope in situ.
Or just route the channel's audio out to another audio track and tweak that fader.

individual "back to arrangement" buttons for each track in live 6 would make my day.
