dj eq,leaving live 4 traktor?

Post by johnnydeep » Fri Apr 28, 2006 6:16 am

hi.
im fed up. i use live for djing. i use eq4s, and for the djs out there, im sure youll understand, this eq, leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to imitating a real dj mixer eq.dont get me started on eq3. ive tried the eqs on traktor 3...wonderful and brilliant. im on the verge of going to traktor for djing. ill still use live later on for dj/live jamming etc. but for djing, im just fed up with the eqs of live.
ive searched hi and lo for a good dj eq for live but still cant find one.ive tried many, but not found one that really impresses. wondering if anyone knows of a good dj eq plugin for mac osx.dj style, not amstering eq, something that cuts to -26db.u know like a real dj eq. i cant believe that live dont provide one and that its so hard to find.any advice would be awesome. i know traktor doesnt have some fo the treats of live, but the sound of my files are better, and eqing is a dream.
any help would be much appreciated.

ps. only nice people, please reply. no arrogant dick head know it alls please. i dont know y, but this forum seems to attract a lot of know it all, bad attitude people.no offence to the cool people.
kind regards nath

I use traktor for djing, not for its eq's though, I use it because I learned how to mix with vinyl and two turntables and for me traktor is closer to what I know. I just can't, ot have not really tried to get my head around ableton for use as a dj tool. I also use it (traktor) with a hardware dj mixer. Have you considered using live with a real dj mixer?

Maybe I will sell you my copy of traktor.... I want to start buying vinyl again. I'm getting tired of mixing with a computer.

Anyway, I'd say buy your self a decent dj mixer with three or four channels, sound card with four stereo outs and use that.

moving to tractor for the EQ's is a little drastic I think - you would sacrifice alot of lives kooler features to use a toy like traktor.

Smutek hit the nail on the head - get a dj mixer with 3 or 4 channels, and use an audio interface with enough IO's - and use your mixer for mixing.

I have no problem at all DJing with EQ3 (apart from the cpu hit). EQ4 doesn't cut enough for me.

When I DJ vinyl I use Elextrix EQ Killers on each channel though and eq3 is similar to those.

Brilliant little device...

Why use 2 of 'em? I mean, there's a selector for you input so you can use it to control each channel, no? In fact, I use that 1 vs 2 selector to help with mixes on occasion, using it to toggle the eq between channels. Good for end of the 4 bar stutters...

Back on topic, there's DOZENS of good EQ VSTs out there. In fact, I think there's a VST Electrix EQ Killer emulator, isn't there?

I've actually used three before now (with three decks).

I know I can switch between inputs but I'm very hands on with the eq sometimes and I like things to be as visible and accessible as possible.

I have 4 of these as they were very cheap at the time and saved me from buying a new mixer. Apart from the power supply being a little fragile they're cracking little units.

Robin, I sent you a private message (PM) on this subject so as to not derail this tread too much more.

Back on topic, check out the description of something that might work here:

On most mutiband eqs you have to use more than one band to totally kill.

dj eq,leaving live 4 traktor?

Post by johnnydeep » Sat Apr 29, 2006 1:30 am

hi guys . thanx for all your replies.
i forgot to mention. i have mac with osx, and i think eq killer is win only.
as for traktor. as mentioned the eqing is lush.
those who are using external mixers, can appreciate this. the reason i want a plugin eq, is i record my live sets to my harddrive, and i edit the mixes, for my 2 radio shows. eqing with plugins allow me to edit the mix.yeh yeh, i know, a real dj wouldnt have to edit, blah blah, but no matter how good your set is, its rare, when u dont want to slightly touch up a mix, especially when goin to radio. i find u can get awaay with it a bit more live.anyhow, bak to topic.
the other cool thing with traktor.my files just sound better, many of my mp3s sound dull in comparison on live. ideally id just like the eqs of traktor on live. im still completely mistified that i cant find a good dj eq. ive looked and looked. lots of mastering eqs, eqs for windows. i think its a huge omission of abletons part to not give us a decent eq. and for those using eq3,4 . when u get a chance, try using an external mixer,(a good one) and be reminded of how special it is to eq properly again.. the other reason, i want a plugin dj eq, is , when i set up at clubs, i want, one cable to the mixer, i hate settin up just to dj.its different, if u are gonna do something much more profound than djing, and a bit of looping, remixing.
so any tips, on a good dj eq plugin for mac, would be great.
oh the other impressive thing i found in traktor, id like to see in live, is u can re arrange your music, without it being in alphabbetical order. not ture u can do that with live.
ps im not tryin to start a live vs traktor war. i just want enjoy my djing, u know the deal

the guy that does the mastering for all Ministry of Sound releases has come up with a way to use EQ DJ style, i.e. with 0 value at 12 o'clock...

I am awaiting his template.
