What does Stout the Baw mean - or am I saying that right? Like a older guy dating a younger girl

"Heid the baw" means a mental person.

I think Stoat means young women.

I've done it. California to Paris 1 1/2 years ago, still in Paris. There are many excellent suggestions already on the topic already.

Plan in advance. (Which you are doing...more than I did anyway!)

Look into starting a company to employ yourself in your chosen country...the company could be based in the USA or in the foreign country (which I did).

Learn the language.

Pack light- forget your bed, dude. My cherrywood bed is in CA. So is most of my several hundred pounds of vinyl. (This is the major incentive to go Ableton in my musical life.)

Living abroad is a great experience- I wouldn't trade it for the world. But nowhere is perfect and one of the hallmarks of going native is finding all the problems with your new home!

forgot to mention- being on a student visa can be much more flexible than trying to work in a foreign country (even if you are making money in some way), and since you don't speak spanish you said, why not enroll for language courses? just a thought.

I'd like to be done with school before going over - I need a trade other than being the world renowned superstar dj that I am (that was a joke)

but I'm very curious about starting a US Based company and paying yourself through that company which makes things easier living abroad

but like I said, I'm also interested in becoming a citizen (which is pretty drastic maybe easier in London than Spain) but a citizen none the less

that way I can hopefully continue my education at a discounted rate etc etc

The idea is not to be a full time student, but to take language courses a few hours a week (which you need if you really want to integrate in Spain- just learning on the street will teach you a rather bastardized version of a language, with no ability to 'clean it up' when its important. And it's much quicker in a good school.) The student visa could be one way of being in a place legally while you establish yourself and make contacts. In France, you don't need to be a citizen or a resident to enroll in school, I imagine it's the same in the rest of the EU. And yes, its cheap by our standards.

The website of the embassy of the country you are interested in should be able to tell you exactly what you would need to do to run a business in their country. As a general rule of thumb, if you are generating revenue for them in the form of taxes, they are inclined to look favorably on your activities. Whatever you do: have a plan, know the steps and the rules, stay legal on paper (the only way you will ever fulfill your goal of being a citizen, which takes quite a while BTW), and be prepared to stand in a lot of lines with your paperwork in order and copies in triplicate.

Break rules when necessary and well-considered, of course.

I'm also considering leaving my 'native' city and relocating. London -> Recife.

Luckily I already teach English to foreign students and speak Portuguese, but it isn't easy to get a legal job there (Brazil).

I've been to Brazil a few times now, and once a friend asked me "Why are you going?" To which I replied something along the lines of "I'm not sure. I want to get away from London." He then came back with "But you know you can't run away from yourself! You can't just 'be someone else'!" I felt a little insulted at that, I thought it a real lack of support.
I went though (and had a great time).

And, essentially, he was right

Q: What forms our personalities?
A (according to some): Life experiences - how we have reacted (and what we have learnt from those reactions) to what happens to us. Our surroundings play a fundamental part in our life experiences. Have you ever lived in a slum/ by a beach/ on a farm/ tower block? (etc) And what sort of people make up those places you have been in?

Your personality can change because of your surroundings and therefore your reaction(s) to them would be different than where you came from (e.g. Seattle i.e. different surroundings). Having different/ fresh reactions would lead to changing your personality and how you shape future reactions - changing your life pattern and ending up in a neat little cycle, on which I can end this post!

I left London in 1985 and went back for the first time last year!

Lived in Hong Kong for a couple years; moved to Seattle for 7 seven years (yawn), Toronto for 6 months (way too cold) then back to HK where I still am.

I probably would be far richer if I'd stayed in England and worked hard, but I'm far richer in spirit for having moved overseas.

Recently got married to a local, and have a lovely 2 yr old girl, and we'd stay here forever, except that getting work here is far harder since we retruned to the mainland, and the pollution from said mainland is slowly killing this city.

Interestingly, we are also considering a move to Spain (I'm old enough to enjoy siestas now

) in the next few years. Have to get some money in first tho.....

To sum up: Yup, get out of Seattle while you can. It's an ok city if your old and want stability, but sucks the life out of you if you're young. That's not to say that there aren't other US cities worth living in, but def try overseas if you can. It can be truly inspirational.
