record automation in session mode

Post by areinitz » Mon Feb 13, 2006 12:46 am

why shouldnt you be able to record automation in a clip in session mode? like if you have the sweep of a filter assigned to a midi knob and you could record the changes>>>

just wanted to make sure that you knew there were envelopes in clip view for FX on a track in session view. but yeah i think you have to draw them, can't record (?)

Yeah, it's pretty shit that you can't do it without workarounds... there's a thread somewhere about doing it using a MIDI loopback utility I think....

you can record all automation in any view as long as the global record button is switched on.

totally agree - I for one have been pushing for 2 record buttons, sequence and automation - it drives me nuts at the moment how it records everything into arrange when you are recording

yes you should be able to record just automation into the session - so if you could just record all the automation into session and not commit any of it to arrange

then even better you could have an automation track so you could commit it to the arrange when you've got it right in session

I suppose you could just do that by having automation overdubbed onto the track without deleting the sequence but I think it would be better to keep it seperate

This is my number one wish for Live! I'm recording automation from the very beginning of a new track and it's a pain in the ass that it can't be done in session. I can't use session the way it's meant to be.
I hope this has a high priority and makes it into Live 6!

this is a longstanding issue that the developers have been made aware of. they fully know that if L6 doesnt record automation then there will be a mutiny.

I won't upgrade to L6 without session cc record anyway.

Yeah, I'm very curious to see what happens with 6 on this

I went on alot about automation and how much it gets on my nerves at camp ableton and it became quite a long discussion in the workshop - whether it will make it by 6 I'm not sure because there still seemed to be alot of disagreement between the Abes as to how it should work, and they also did make it clear how difficult it's been trying to implement recording contoller automation in session

We went into quite alot of detail drawing diagrams etc but like everything that weekend they were trying their hardest to not give anything tangible away

but one thing absolutely certain is that it's something that's been discussed long and hard because there were clearly some differing opinions that had been debated extensively before that moment

one thing we did get from the weekend and talking to everyone including coders was that usually the deciding what and how is by far the hardest part and often implementing it is quite straight forward and doesnt neccessarily take long - so that might mean it's not out of the question after we left they could have made up their minds how to do it and gone ahead

in fact they could have already decided and were just arguing it again to further make their cases

For me personally this is my biggest problem with live at the moment and I made that clear in the strongest possible terms!

my #1 too, I won't update my live 4 until I could record clip automations.
the #1 reason (with ghost clips and pools) I m looking to alternative software.
I really hope live 6 will include such a feature. it's far more mportant than any mp3 import or video support...

hey, I was just playing with pitchwheel, recording it's move straight in the pattern, so, I just thought, ok, this horrrrrrible live record and replay midi moves in pattern and don't record its f**ing own automation. annoying.
so, I grabed my sweet little energyXT from my tool box, inserted it as an instrument, made a learn in energyXT on a filter... and now I can record filter automation in live. the only problem is that the enveloppe recorded is not named. but it works perfectly.

great idea

however, the possibility of recording automation into session would be great

Does this have to do with what you are talking about?
I submitted this thread on the Reaktor forum, and got this answer.

Question
In Ableton Live you can create envelopes for all parameters of any of the FX you have on an audio channel, "inside" the audio clips you have on that channel. It would be very useful to be able to assign a similar envelope as a loop on an incoming audio signal. It would work like a "pre-enveloped empty clip", and one could trigger it, the way one triggers an audio clip in Live.
An example: I play the guitar monitored on an audio channel in Live, along with audio or MIDI clips. At a certain point of my playing, in order to create a structure, I want to be able to trigger an FX automation loop with a foot controller, without stopping to play the guitar. And so, I do not even need to play the guitar in loop, and still have an FX giving the impression of the loop.

Does somebody know of a tool like this? Or where should I start to build it?

Answer
You can do this in Live alone by using MIDI rerouting. You create an empty midi track which will feature the automation clips, route the MIDI to control the parameters of your audio track, and then loop the MIDI tracks. There are quite a few posts on the ableton forum that explain the process in more detail. To do this in reaktor, you would do the same thing actually, create a REaktor ensemble generating midi automation data (for example midi on/off notes, or midi CC data, which will be sent to live and then assigned to control the parameters you want to control). In reaktor you could use an event table, or an LFO for example to generate the midi control data (or whatever control you want to have).

Anyway, I still have not figured out how it could work inside Live.. somebody more talented, maybe?

just found the solution:)))
actually, Machinate found it, almost 2 years ago:

http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... highlight=

thank you, Machinate, I would not have guessed that the "monitor in" function still allows the effects to work and follow some fake clip's automation settings. That was the tricky part. This will multiply my kung-fu by 1000!
