Help using MacBook Pro digital input

Help using MacBook Pro digital input

I have a Macbook Pro and am trying to use the built-in audio of the MBP but am running into a problem.
I can't seem to get optical input to work.In the system pref-sound there is a choice of mic or line but not digital so I choose line.
In the audio/midi settings I can change sample rates but clock setting is greyed out.I should set it to slave to incoming digital signal.
I'm new to Mac so I'm not sure where else to look.

Check your audio midi setup in /Applications/Utilities
