I need 7 outs (FOH stereo, rear surround stereo, in-ear monitor stereo, visualizer feed mono).

For me, it makes sense for the sound card and mixer to be the same. No unnecessary A/D or D/A conversions, or extra boxes or cables.

My Yamaha 01V works perfectly for me. 8 digital ins and outs, with no hassle, and the ability to use the mixer's EQ/dynamics/FX to minimize the CPU hit.

I know a lot of you guys don't like M-audio.... but the best piece of kit I've bought recently is the Projectmix I/O.
It caters for all my needs, both live and in the studio.
Audio/midi interface and control surface in 1 NICE unit.
I only have to use my mouse to load new songs - the rest can be done in the Projectmix

(for my kind of production anyway)

BTW - it sounds great, latency is low and it's very stable

My actual setup for Live Djing is one of 2:

Allen Heath XONE 3D ( 3 stereos outs) + MacBook

or

Focusrire Saffire (4 stereo outs) + Novation Zero SL + MacBook + DJM 800

What would be the best in the $300 range? I am looking to run ableton on my MBP as well as a xponent and then a alesis micron so i will also need midi to run the micron thru ableton

For my PC laptop (no firewire port) i have the Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1. This thing works great, it is:

2in 4out
usb2 (bus powered)
has HW selectable routing from sets of outputs to the headphone outs
1 mic pre w phantom
1 line in (selectable to instrument level)
3 assignable buttons
1 assignable knob

i bought it with DJing specifically in mind, but it has become my interface of choice for most everything.

I'm using the Mbox2. It's very stable, never causes any crashes. Got it at the academic price. Needed Pro Tools hardware for the new intel mac at the time. Best of all, it introduced me to Live!

MBox2 is bus powered
+2 db output
4 inputs (2 analog, 2 spdif)
2 outputs
midi in/out

Can use Pro Tools if I want, but hardly ever anymore.

Wish it had more outputs.

Hi, I use the RME Audio HDSP 32. I have a desktop that i've continued to rebuilt and update and this is my main music machine. For my needs, I find that the RME is a wonderful card and the sonic quality and low latency is fantastic.

I see alot of people use a Firewire connected soundcard. Why are these preffered over a USB one? The USB are better priced IMHO.

Recently I won a Presonus FireStudio 26x26 and MSR Controller, I was just wondering if anybody has used one & what do they think about it? (I haven't used it as yet)

Firewire is a more stable and audio friendly protocol than USB...
I own a MOTU828 MKII and i'm pretty happy with it.In my opinion MOTU & RME stuff are a great choise but if i had to go higher i would recommend a Metric Halo(http://www.mhlabs.com/metric_halo/) or an Apogee(http://www.apogeedigital.com/)...

An RME Multiface I here...works great. The only down fall for me it's a bit incompatibility with the firmware and can't update...that means that I can't use the settings app...just the totalmix, but as the last owner is a musician, too, the card was setup perfect for me.
By the way...as I have a Macbook Pro, I use a Duel adapter to expresscard for the PCMCIA cardbus 32. I can have all my equipment connected and playing at the same time into Ableton Live through the Multiface.

i own a PreSonus Firepod 8in/10out. which worked really well until it failed. also, an Digidesign MBox2, whish was a huge waste of money and also broke.

i kinda like this expensive sh*t. and its gotta have some kind of separate routing for a cue/headphone output.
