Can’t wrap my head around Audio and MIDI latency settings!

I just want to know how I can be sure that I’m recording dead-on accurate so i have a MIRROR FEEDBACK regarding my grooves and feel.

I already know about the monitor OFF trick; I’ve already set the Overall Latency by the TUTORIALS’ directions to 11 ms (10.04 in/out + 1.0). my Delay Compensation is set to ON.

I don’t understand the differences in adjusting Track Delay after recording audio in, vst plug-in, Live Device, or MIDI-IN from an external sound Source.

MIDI:

I had to “manually” set the Track Delay to around –40.0 ms to compensate for what i just recorded, but playing my vst Battery 2 was horribly latent. Then at 0.0 ms, it was better . But then at around +75.0 ms i get this amazing tight latency, that feels so good! How do i accurately set the positive delay?

Audio:

My practice is to Direct Monitor through my MOTU while I record. When I record an AUDIO drum track against a drumloop in Ableton’s sequencer (played perfectly tight to what I heard in my monitors), upon playback, I hear it is late. Again, how do I accurately set these negative delay compensations? I thought the adjustment I made in PREFERENCES took care of this.

How do you deal with Track Delay when jumping from playback, to record, to over-dub? And with direct monitoring vs. internal vs. VST. I’m a little confused..

Recommend downloading 5.0.3 or 5.2? I’ve heard there are still midi/audio latency confusions/problems in 5.03.

can anyone tell me how to accurately set the negative or positive Track Delay settings? do you just do it by ear?

I have yet to see the Track Delay have any effect - this has created a huge issue for me in my live setup- if anyone knows if i'm doing something wrong, please chime in.

regarding my original post, i'm surprised no one has posted an answer. i presume the question is like asking "what's the meaning of life". sometime's we're on our own... maybe i'll try the abe's...

Track delay has no effect in my setup (using an external clock) whether "delay compensation" is on or off.

I don't think track delay is supposed to do anything when you're using an external clock.

I thought it was adjusted automatically based on how you set the track monitoring. For example, if you set a track's monitoring to "Off," then the Overall Latency adjustment you made automatically comes into play so that the delay from your hardware is compensated for. If you set it to "In" or "Auto" - this means you are monitoring your signal at Live's output - and the Overall Latency setting you made is ignored because it is of no use (since you would be compensating for the latency yourself - probably subconsiously - because you are listening to the delayed Live output signal as you play instead of your actual live playing).

Is this not true? I could not find anythingn in the manual that confirms this.

Maybe someone from Ableton can provide input about these setting and how they work????

Why should track delay be disabled when using an external clock? That doesn't make any sense to me. Track delay is for adjusting latency on an individual track in relation to the rest of the song, and the need for that functionality doesn't magically disapear when you sync to an external clock.
I read everything i could find about track delay and couldn't find anything about this in the manual - if you find anything to confirm your assumption, please let me know.

Hi GaryTracks,

I have got the same problems and questions as you have, but unfortunately no answer yet. I am trying to record my drums and get everything about 70 to 80ms late. The "extra" delay in the preferences for my soundcard is 32ms, but to me it seem it doesn't make a difference what I type in there.

Latency compensation (in the menu) is for internal instruments only, as far as I understood the manual, and track delay on all tracks after recording works, but isn't a good solution and certainly not made for that purpose.

I will ask the abletons for an answer, maybe I can tell you then.

I'm having the same issue with my Motu 828Mk2.
Have you figured it out?
-I monitor myself latency free using the DSP routing engine of the Motu
-I have the monitoring of the track I record on set to off
-Setting the Hardware latency to 256 gets me 12ms latency.

I'm really confused on how to do this

perhaps im missing something but cant you just do the test in the lessons (that come with live)? I had to do it manually by sight but once i got it right the latency seems to be spot on (more or less).

I only use track delay for stereo widening purposes.
