Sampletank

Post by welbicitus » Mon May 01, 2006 11:29 am

Why is it everytime I load Sampletank into Live, it crashes? I've tried it as a VST, and as an AU. No luck. I've emailed Ableton - they took a copy of the crash log and never replied. Contacted IK - nuthin'. I have an iMac G5 1.8mhz 1 gig ram. CPU load only around 15 or 20% when it crashes. I've seen the frustration here in the forums. This is my first foray(?) into the virtual world. Is this what I can expect? Very frustrating!

Hi, PC here.
I had some problems but now they seemed less frequent on 5.2, even though
they are still there. You can see a post of mine with 5.0.2 and 5.0.3 describing the problem. Despite what Ableton says, it's Live causing the problems.
I have tested with Cubase SX 2 and they NEVER happen.
With 5.2 I have noticed that even if they occur if you save often you can walk around this problem, for it's a random crash and in 5.2 occurs less often.
What I suggest is to remove any other VSTs in the VST folder except SampleTank and then try again (especially craked VSTs, if any or free VSTs), by adding one by one, you should get what the deadly combination is. Of course you are on 5.0.3 being a G5, and I will not even bet that PowerPC versions are still actively developed, but try this should minimize the frequency.
The virtual world is amazing. Personally I think SampleTank has the best Cost/Performance ratio on the marketplace.

Thanks, Pasha.

Sampletank is the only VST I'm running. I was an acoustic drummer for 20 years, and am still a newbie here. (Spare the drummer jokes, please.) Whatever suggestions you can give are very much appreciated. I may do a clean install of everything from the OS up, and see what happens.

Hi Chadhugo,

Which Live version you're running on Mac OS ?
I'm a PC user and it's not clear to me if a 5.2 has been released for PowerPC.

Hi Welby,
I own the 'little brother' of SampleTank XL, named SampleTank LE that comes with Expansion Tank. Just for your info. Let me know how you proceed with that.

Okay!

I figured it out. A typical newbie mistake, I suppose. Everytime I loaded multiple instances of ST, Live crashed. I was loading ST separately on every track I wanted to run! No wonder it crashed. To solve this problem, I loaded ST only onto 1 track. We'll call it Midi 2. Then, I loaded another midi track, but routed it back to track Midi 2. Then, a third midi track, routed back to Midi 2, and so on. This way, I can load multiple instruments through ST, 16 at a time, but ST is only loaded once - on Midi 2! I hope this makes sense. Works like a charm now! :D

Well Done!!!

You own SampleTank 2.1 XL ?
I'm due to upgrade from Expansion Tank Omni Synth and I would like to know if the variety of sounds, being a sample player, covers more than ethnic or real instruments, for example how about pad sounds and key lead?

Thanks for reply. Did you ever tried Sonic Synth as well? How do you think they position themselves?

Thanks in advance,

I haven't tried Sonik Synth, but it looks awesome! Whereas ST is more of a traditional and ethnic based sampler, this is all synth. I may have to add on.
