G3 - Crap or What??

Hello, I use Live 3 on a G3 800Mhz iBook using OSX 10.2.6. At the moment I am practicing and learning, but would like to go further.

My problem is if I push it (80-90% CPU usage) it seems to get unstable when suddenly doing things like putting another effect on or using VST effects too harsh (Supertrigga etc.) Also, when about to render, it will sometimes crash and all is lost.

I will soon be getting a Dual 2Ghz G5 (fun times ahead), but would like to know if my problems with Live 3 now are the result of asking a dinosaur to do ballet, and thus, would the G5 kill my pain - or is Live 3 a bit buggy still...

your G5 should rock the party. weird things are bound to happen when Live's cpu meter is that high. I imagine your new system will be able to handle more than twice the number of tracks and effects. I find 2.0.3 to be the most stable (its not a huge difference, but when performing on stage, I want the most reliable), as do many others that perform with Live. enjoy the g5, you will definitely be happy.

Thanks for the advice, though I probably exaggerated the CPU usage by 20% or so. Most things crash at the 80+ level if I think about it...

In theory, just pushing the CPU usage shouldn't make anything crash.
More likely, is that the plugins themselves are unstable and causing crashes.
Changing hardware isn't going to change your software stability. Though, on the G5 you'll be using OS X 10.3 which will make a difference.

but aren't a lot of Live users preferring OS9 over X?--seems like I've read more than one post here of people that are sticking with 9....

there are many possible reasons for sticking with 9 - certain plugins, particular hardware drivers might not have been updated etc.
but in terms of Live itself, there's not much to choose between OS 9 and Panther in terms of performance.
