JoMoX vs. Machinedrum

Post by dbolt » Mon May 08, 2006 11:17 pm

Okay I've been researching out on these two Analog boxes. I've read rave reviews about the Elektron Machinedrum and I can already tell that most will say Machinedrum UW version all the way hands down. Can anyone elaborate and convience me to spend the extra cheese on the Elektron Machinedrum. I wish their were more in depth videos on the both boxes. Does anyone know of any besides sonicstate's review?

I have a Electribe ER 1 mk11 I plan on selling and thinking about selling my Electribe EMX 1 to afford one of these boxes. If anyone's interested.

I know their are both digital processed percussive synth instruments. I don't know why I said Analog. It emulates Analog I guess..

the JoMoX is real analog.... so you were half right in both your posts

The JoMoX is cool, but MUCH more limited in what you can do and the types of sounds you can create than the machinedrum.

The UW is only worth it if you want to have sampled drums (or sample during a performance). Personally I'm more interested synthised drums than sampled...

As a MUCH cheaper option, you can use the Drumular VSTi, and trigger from the Electribe R. The Drumular sounds better than the machinedrum to me...but depends on whether you want a standalone beatbox or not.

what kind of music are you looking to make? how are you looking to produce? the MD has a great interface, but it was sidelined when I got my 909, and that's kind of been away recently as i've been using samples which sound pretty much the same and is slightly easier for me to work with. so I'd say go for the jomox, but I can see where the MD is more useful to some people and some genres.

grrrr...lost my post

anyways, the machinedrum is a great sequencer - has a huge pallete of sound possibilities, sounds nasty & industrial or heavenly melodic , and everything inbetween. Its so simple to use...you can just use it with no ideas, and come up with all kinds of new kits and patterns to use later....its really my 'go-to' instrument these days, so much so I have to make myself not neglect my other tools.

the uw, as everyone says, is well worth it. its a wicked 12bit sampler, only these samples are in the machine drum, where it can be twisted and morphed md style.

my friend owns the jomox airbase, I dont like it. the sound is seriously limited, the only one worth keeping being the kick - which sounds great! ...but jesus, thats it. the hi hats and snare sound sucky, and are only samples I think - being run through the analog circuitry.....definatly not worth owning the unit for, could easily be replaced with a few samples. I would hate to sequence anything with it, let alone more gear...

you will have a hard time finding people dissapointed with their machinedrum, or UW (unless they were expecting mpc style sampling capabilities) - but I think you could quite easily find dissappointed airbase owners. I'd own an airbase, if it was cheap...just for the kick. and sequence the kick via the machinedrum.

also, its worth noting that jomox sell the mbase01, which is a kickdrum module. costs around 250 euro, and can recreate the 808 and 909 kickdrums beautifully I hear, and alot inbetween. this module sequenced by the machinedrum would be F-ing sweet. Not only that, you can use an audio input as a trigger for the kickdrum - so you could for example route a kick from the machinedrum to a seperate output, and into the mbase for zero-latency triggering of the kick. You could also just use midi to sequence it, if you wanted to sequence changes in the sound etc.

machinedrum uw, hands down the finest of the two and certainly more useful, much much MUCH more useful....

check the new xbase999! have you visitsed both of there websites? if you can't live with out analogue the md will never satisfy your taste. but creatively - you can do more! to me however that means little when it still doesn't have 'that sound' so its really up to your personal tastes. give and sacrifice

Good stuff!!!! I think the Elektron is so pricey b/c of its newness and some major muscians use it right now.

I like software I even use the Reaktor .ens Machine Gun sometimes and its sounds decent.

You know the more I think about I think I should spend that $1300 to $1500 on a new 17" imac duo.

what kind of music are you looking to make?
I generally lean toward Breakbeat/IDM/Teckno but sometimes I'm not sure what my sounds like more experimental for the most part.

I've been using my ER 1 mk11 but It doesn't have that punchy sonic sound I'm looking for. I can't play drums at all so Im looking for a DrumMachine that I can easily Seq. and tweak to find a original programmed sound.

heh...the machinedrum isnt 'new' ...its been out for years, and theres already talk of its replacement...

as far as I know, it never went 'up' in price - so major musicians using it has nothing to do with the price, as far as I'm concerned. It probably never went down in price because its so damn good and everyone who touches it loves it. and major musicians use it cos its fucking cool - and great to jam with, absolutely designed to be mangled live and caters well to that, as well as intricate sequencing in the studio.

really, there is no hype about the machine drum. every single word is true and understated...

I'm an analogue whore, a complete slut, I've got some real nice analogue gear - and I do not agree with the statements made which suggest if you want THAT analogue sound the machinedrum will dissapoint......you would play with it and go 'WOW...' and completely forget about 'THAT' sound, because you can do pretty damn well replicating it - amongst creating all kinds of melodies/madness completely unrelated. Get a jomox and you will press the kick button...and go 'Wow...' and then 'right...whats next then' ...and that my friend is when dissapointment will set in.

obviously, if you had this narrow view in your minds-ear of what sound you wanted - and this amounted to exactly what the jomox is - then ya, a machinedrum no matter how excellent would not satisfy. a tonne of gold wouldnt satisfy you either, or the worlds greatest synth - given the same logic.

man, the machinedrum is custom built for you. I will record some sounds from both the machinedrum and the jomox for you tomorrow, you'll have to understand that I can only touch the surface of the machinedrums potential......but ya, you'll know exactly the full scale of the jomox, bar creative eqing.

i've got excellent ad/da's so that wont come into it...the analogue glory of the jomox will be captured.

The only reason I said it was new b/c I read an interview with the Chemical Brothers talking about their newest album "Push the Button" (I can't remember the website I just googled it) and they mentioned they love their new Machinedrum they just got and they didn't mention the UW either which is the newest upgrade. I just think it has one hell of a price tag on it. I know I will love it and hope that my financial aid will be enough to get it and have enough money left over that my fiancée wont notice how much I paid for the Machinedrum.

well...its far from new, just so you know...

and its a very fair price, in my opinion....considering its a fantastic sequencing interface & a fantastic synth & a wicked lofi sampler with wicked controls...

really...I dont think it could be much cheaper then it is already....I dont know of any other instrument which offers as much for any less....

it may not be the money you want to spend, fair enough, but I guarantee you - you will not feel like its even a cent over priced after you use it for 2 minutes.

wondering where to go next should not be a question when using the jomox because every single parameter is midi controllable. whether in your sequencer program or on the jomox09/999. you can progam a different values fo each parameter on every step in your sequence. so not knowing where to go is a limitation of ones creativity i believe. drexciya, for example, sounds how they sound not only because of their remarkable creativity and talent, but also because of the gear they use. it has an undeniable impact on the end result and would not be the same if they did the same thing note for note on machinedrum and virtual synths. i'm not saying one way is better than the other because that is personal taste but they are different, and it depends which needs are greatest to be filled for some one looking to buy gear.
