Yeah, if it's an analog bass drum sound you are looking for, then you should consider the Jomox Mbase01 which is strictly an analog bass drum module that rules... it also makes some other bass sounds with minimal tweaking but it does the bass drum sound the right way! They are currently about $250 or so used...dbolt wrote:Your right about the EMX 1 I don't want to sell it right away it has a lot possibilities sound and interface wise. I guess whats really got me shopping and eager to get a synthetic drum machine is b/c of my ER 1 mk2 lack of interface and sound design possibilites. I mean its very limited I can never use it without a guitar pedal to color the sound some way and the hi hat and crash are horrible like I've heard about the JoMoX. I also heard the JoMoX has one the best sounding BAss Drum sound out their. So my goal might reach alittle closer to the JoMoX.
JoMoX vs. Machinedrum
I like the sonic charge microtonic excells at synth drum noises. I have mixed feelings about its interface, but its sonic palette is wide and the "tone" of the sounds is exactly what I was looking for - warm and round (I know that those terms are entirely subjective and relatively useless in describing a sound, but that's how I hear it. It can do a mean 909 kick (young 909 is my preferred preset), but it can do all kinds of drum sounds, and even acts as a great synth. in fact, I've created lots of patches using the uTonic as a sound source; since it takes up little CPU, you can route many togethor for polyphony. really, for the price, unbeatable. I love it.NewSc2 wrote:for that matter, what have you guys found to do cool synthetic drum noises?
i'm sure we all know and love richie hawtin's sets, and many of those sets have the random blips and bzzt's that seem to be the Machinedrum's thing.
I already have a 909, so i want to see what other options there are for good rhythmic noises.
I use Impuls for my sampled drums; seriously looking into Guru and Stylus, but want to learn Live much deeper than I do now - I've been using since 1.5 but only recently upgraded to 5.2.
I think the Korg Red box with tubes sounds great though - much better than machine drum...
so what are you saying,....buy a compressor/limiter ? that's a no brainer man, and not really relevant if we are talking about the drum machines themselves. indeed almost anything you put through a compressor/limiter will improve with respect percussion.steve-o wrote:I found the sound to be very digital and harsh, whereas I was looking for something warmer.
In my experience, for the pumping thick thumping whatever drums, a quality compressor and or limiter is key, as are topnotch samples. If the basic sound of the amcine drum appeals to you then by all means get one. In my opinion its a niche item, and priced accordingly.
and like I already said - if you have a distinct, and narrow idea of what exact sound you want - and that amounts to the three sounds the jomox makes - well then, that's another no brainer.
and besides, dbolt already stated what sound he was after - which amounts to the sound the machinedrum provides....idm & electronic etc. I dont think he said he wanted to make minimalist techno with one warm kick drum....
I find it hard to stomach your cirticism of the machinedrum, just because it wasnt the sound you were after - its obviously a great machine whether its your cup-of-tea or not is a different story. How the hell did you end up buying a machinedrum anyways if the sound wasnt what you wanted ? do you just throw hundreds of dollars around on stuff you know nothing about ?
its like...if I wanted the sound of bagpipes , and instead I bought an expensive flute - then told people the flute sucked and was for a niche market....lol
My report, as promised.
Good and bad news. Bad- no Jomox available right now , even worse the new Jomox will be as expensive as machine drum. Good news the shop will be getting both the old models and they will go new for 499 and 199 Euros much less then the current Ebay second hand ( was checking recently). Like the MPD16 case, selling of the old stocks, one time chance I am not going to miss.
I still have to hear and experiment having both side by side and I will take my notebook to test it all in my Live sets.
I like everything about Machinedrum except 2 things which are actually the most important,
1. sound- just dont like it, not my taste does not grab my by the ear or anything else, has something schrill, unpleasant, unmusical like 128 mp3( I do exeggerate perhaps).
2. programing> pattern length is ridiculous, that actually killed any idea about buying it.
I love the way it is made, would be so perfect for stage, transportation etc but....
Anyway I feel the software became so damn good that it is hard vor any digital hardware to match it, unless you need sounds for top 40 band, and then you buy Triton or Motif.
Whatever NI, Reason or so many other, they are all too good, we never had it that good indeed. So the only hardware, I feel, makes any sense to invest is analog ( if anyone feels need for it and I do). As far as my needs go these are bass and lead, regarding drums i dont care too much for analog SD or HH so I may go for Mbase 01 since thick, fat, creamy kick is what I want- I like also that you can directly trigger it with any pedal. All other electronic drums and percussion I can make to my taste with software of choice, very different from that aseptic, cold scandinavian ( reminds me of Nordlead though Clavia is much better, more creamy) Machinedrum. I am not saying it is bad, just different then what I like, you know I cant stand Bjork ( she is great all respect but I dont like to look at her neither hear her music, it is not my thing) while can enjoy even most commercial shite of Shakira- as long as she is visible and moving her hips.
OK so here you are Machinedrum-intelectual, cold, speculative Bjork and Jomox juicy bottom of Shakira or JLo.
P.S. I know why the other guy got Machinedrum though he didnt like it that much-pure gearlust, this thing is really well made, absolutely perfect, hard to resist.

this is all really weird to me, caring that much about a bass drum sound. i would think you'd want to find your own, rather than replicate existing sounds. but i suppose it's akin to how guitar players feel about certain old amps -- the marshall or fender twin is the only sound you need to consider in certain circumstances, so you use it again and again and again.
all that said, i've been eyeing the machine drum, but like some of the others posting, can't figure out how it's that much better than what i can do with live or with the various options in reaktor 5. anyone know if machine drum's really that much better than using live along with massive, limelight, sinebeats or whatever else available on reaktor? thx.

fuck all that. Get all three:
Machinedrum
Electribe
Jomox
That's what I did. I love all three for what they can do and sound like. I used the Jomox 999 at Messe (I think Jurgen thought I was stalking him. LOL) for awhile and it sounds absolutely awesome. I used to have an airbase and an 09, but my opinion of the 999 is that it is amazing machine.
If your music centered around EDM and rhythm, AND you play live, then you need all three. Invest and maximize your drum options. That's my opinion anyway.

What up D
Man, the machinedrum is hot fa sho and I want one but I think I'll wait until the beats I'm making now will make me some cheddar to buy the machinedrum and several other "Vital" bits of kit I "need"
you got all you need with those electribes - they're hot
Microtonic is cool - the kicks are massive and with a little skill you can make it sound as good as anything on the planet - big up Mictrotonic
but I'm of the opinion it's best to use what you got until what you got makes you enough money to buy want you aint got - but I could be saying all this 'cause I'm broke...but then I could buy a Machinedrum with a CC and be even more broke - but I'd have a Machinedrum...NAH!

Yea I know adonis were obviously gearsluts like most on this forum. I have lots of gear and I just keep wanting more and more. I don't even play live nor have I make any money with my beats only for pleasure and sharing on myspace. I just truly enjoy making beats in my homemade studio it’s a way to let out energy. But of course the motivation is maybe one day the internet will prevail my energy and creativity and someone will pimp my tracks out for $$$
I started this thread b/c I have some finical aid money (pell grant) and was lusting after some new gear ( I know I'm selfish my fiancée reminds me of this all the time) I also have been lusting after a certain sound, which I know I should work on finding my own sound not someone else's. I guess I'm hoping to find that one instrument that will help me make more organic music. So I like the aspect of the JoMoX having the Analog Kick and Snare. I think I can hold off on the Machinedrum but who knows I will keep you guys posted on my purchase. I also want the Roland SH 201 and the Desktop Evolver so its going to be some major decisions to make soon.

Pell grant - equals free money, well then you're half way there
get the Machinedrum - I doubt you'll regret it
NEW gear is very inspiring - it's like WOW what I can do now!!! so yeah man...get that
I don't know if I saw in your original post where you were getting some free money to "study" so my bad about the previous post but it is something to think about - I do think there is a line you cross where your hobby becomes your job and the amounto f money you make soley depends on how hard you want to work - when the fun stops then what???
anywayz
I just applied for financial aid for fall and I'd like a Pell G - cause I aint gonna be working (god willing) my last day in a cubicle will be like 2 weeks before fall quarter starts in September...and if I could get a Machinedrum (personally I want a VIRUS TI POLAR and or a SE-1) for practically free I would too
get that!
