Still having trouble with FCB1010...about to give up.

Hey guys, I know the FCB1010 has been discussed to death here and I have read most of the threads, followed all the directions and STILL can't get it to do what I want it to do. here is my issue:

I will be triggering samples in the session view during our live show. I want to trigger around 30-40 or more samples during the show. Everytime I try to program the FCB1010 I get a message asking me if I want to override my previous midi assignment. Is it not possible to do this?

I want to set up each bank of 10 pedals to trigger a different slot in session view. For instance, I want to trigger the first 10 slots in bank 00 from pedal 1-10. Then I want to be able to switch banks by pressing "up" on the FCB1010 to go to Bank 01. Then i want to be able to trigger 10 more slots in session view that are assigned to pedals 1-10. and keep going......IS THIS POSSIBLE? I have read the threads and can find nothing explaining how to set this up. In fatc the two threads below I have read thoughroly and still can't seem to get this to work. Can someone post simple directions on how I can do what I want to do???:oops:

one cc number on one midi channel can only control one thing at a time.
if you want a pedal to control more then on thing, then you need to
be able to change midi channels on the footcontroller.
then each pedal should theoretically be able to trigger 16 clips.
as long as you are on the right channel for the right clip.

Um what your wanting to do is def possible man.

Do you have Midi Monitor? It is free...
Run Midi Monitor and step on your switches. It will show you what messages are being sent when you kick your footswitches.

Each switch on my FCB is sending a different message... and I have set these up as note on/off... which I think is necessary for what you want to do.

the 1010 only sends out midi messages on one midi channel. What you are trying to do is not only possible and logical, but very easy. All you want is one midi note on signal coming from each pedal. as far as I know, the 1010 has two led slots--there is no way it is telling you "Everytime I try to program the FCB1010 I get a message asking me if I want to override my previous midi assignment." --Live is telling you that. Don't program the 1010 while using live, or at least not with Live's midi map open. All you need to do is to program each of the 10 pedals of each of the 1010 banks you wish to use to send out one midi note on signal. Try out the yahoo 1010 group, where they have free pc 1010 software editor where you can program the 1010 with the software and simply send an update. Hang in there, you just need to get your head wrapped around midi, and don't confuse Live messages and the 1010--figure out what you want the 1010 to do, and how to do it (which you have already done), program the 1010 as such), then open up live and make the assignments.

Take it you're using one of those buggy 3rd party editors that don't work
and ruin all your settings.

Program it by hand/foot.... Much easier....

Select the bank/patch you want, hold down "Down".
Hit "Up".
Select the param you wish to edit.
Hit "Up".
Edit it.
Hold "Down" to save/exit.

Once all the pedals are set to send a different CC (you only need to send
one, not another value for off as well) it should be fine.

I have been doing exactly what you describe in a show.....so don't give up; once you get yr head around it, it'll be easy and you won't need to mess with the programming so much. Definitely get the editing software from the FCB Yahoo group - there's no way I would try to prog the thing without it.

The Ableton Live message re: overiding previous midi assignment is because you had already assigned a pedal (midi note) to a slot or clip and you were trying to assign another one to it.

My method for programming all the FCB pedals was to assign a different midi note to every pedal. For stupidity's sake I did something like -
Bank 00: pedal 1, midi note 01 pedal 2, midi note 02 etc
finishing with Bank 9: pedal 1, midi note 91, pedal 6, 96. etc
THat way every single pedal on the FCB has a note already assigned, so when I go to the MIDI assign page in Live I dont have to fuck about with programming the FCB too much. As I got more used to the FCB, I started doing more sophisticated assignments.

The software editor makes it a lot easier to visualise. It is a bit dull having to do the programming but it is worth it in the end.

do you need to trigger each scene on its own pedal trigger? if not and you just need to be able to scroll through them use the up down and play scene buttons over on the right....three buttons that i wish i had known about since the beginning.

When I first started using the FCB, I couldn't get a good handle on the physical pedals and I skipped a couple of scenes onstage........



plus you have to use two pedals to play a scene (one for select and another for play) and sometimes there's no time for that......

LOL! Actually I am programming in by hand/foot. No third party editors here. Now I feel really stupid. LOL. Anyway, Thanks guys for all your input. I am going to try this again and follow the advice here and will let you guys know if it works or not. I have a big show coming up soon so i need to get this thing workin'. I do have one last question. what wuld Midi monitor do for me? I downloaded the app but I don't understand it's purpose?

You may or may not find it useful.

It's a little utility that monitors midi input, showing you which messages have been sent when you operate a midi controller. I've got 4 different controllers hooked up and this helps me program/keep track of what messages they are sending and what channels they are on. It can be helpful.

on pc, midi ox/yoke is a great way to monitor all incoming midi signals...

Can anyone give me some specific directions on how to do what I want? I want to be able to trigger individual slots from the session view. One at a time but definitely more than 10 throughout my show. So I would assume I would assign 10 slots to the 10 pedals, and then assign 10 more on a different bank..and so on and so on. You need to make sure that it is sending out different midi NOTES from each pedal. I don't have any other advice than what you would have found if you really read what there is to be found on the Yahoo user group. In particular, go to the files section and read the document "FCB 1010 and Ableton Live". This is what me helped me wrap my head around it. I am now triggering scenes, turning things on and off, etc, like I'm playing Dance Dance Revolution. It is a nice piece of hardware for the price.

Ok. You and others mentioned that you can trigger scenes. What about individual slots? Like 20 or 30 of them? Is that possible? I am assigning every pedal to a different midi note. And I am still getting the same error message about overriding the previous assignment. i understand midi. I have never had a problem with midi until I got this pedal. I have also read the document you mentioned too. I am folling the directions word for word but it's still not allowing me to do what I want.

Assigning and triggering slots should be the same as scenes. I'm at the limit of my knowledge... anyone else?
