I didn't blindly go out and buy a macbok all starry eyed. I checked out the score with rosetta, compatibility etc. I was even told on this forum that a macbook would wipe the floor with my powerbook in every aspect.
no need to get all uppity about it though... Wow, I didn't know you guys were so sensitive!

What is this really? You're "stupid" when you did not read all those forum chit chat. "Spend money" and get "a bit of fairly advice" seems not to be sufficient either! You see, a litlle time reading "sound on sound" or "the inquirer" wont do the trick... Read it a lot: maybe. Probably not. Its a nice try, but we just want to make music, i think... "Performance is the key" but it's probably not...
The smartass in the "macbook pro-shop" probably does not know what you're (really) talking about or doesn't care. Rosetta is proably a hore and he's fuckin' her every night. (poor Rosetta...)
Anyway, if i were you 'register' i'd take my lappy back out of the box and have a long chat with her. Look in her one-eyed bright pretty face...(love boat music..., flair&glow...stop.) and confess your needs. But know your needs. Tell here you can fuck here better then the man with the tie and see what she says... It's maybe a matter of time... Music is within YOU!
I'am a pc user. Bill gates weares a tie too. He's a pimp with the cheaper hores, but you have to fuck'em all!(not the hores)
Don't believe the hype.

That shit was funny.
I haven't had any problems getting full work done with my macbook, I mean yeah there is a shitload of apps I have paid for that I am waiting for a UB for, but until then, the tools that are out right now are more than sufficient. It kind of forced me to really work with what is currently available. The restriction has been doing wonders for me and my music. I also now have been learning quite a few new tricks and shoving them up my sleeve to make up for the apps I don't have... it's like I'm actually having to really get deep with live cause that and renoise and a few free plugs are all I have. It's kinda nice and I just look at is as some time needed for learning while I am waiting. And trust me, I have a WHOLE suite of NI shit that is waiting for UB's, but they'll be out eventualy. Keep the laptop dude. Just trust me on this one.

Maybe I was misinformed by an enthusiastic apple store salesperson, but I was under the impression that ALL my apps would work, but with much worse performace than universal binary apps.
Apple store clerks typically know jack about computers.... even the one's they are trying to sell. You can't trust them for anything.
I mean... think about it.... if you had gone in their store 1 day before the MacIntel's arrived.... they would have told you that the PowerBook G4 was more powerful than any PC. Then the MacIntel's come out, and they say that it's 4 times faster than the PowerBook. But it's just a PC with an Apple logo on it. So this means they are admitting PCs were 4 times faster than their PowerBooks.

A bit harsh, guys. I can understand where he might have gotten mis-directed. Sheesh. Not stupid, just mis-informed and not too well thought out, but not stupid. Shit happens to all of us and we learn from it. Register just learned the HARD way.
BTW, Reg, what apps are you trying to use that only work in Rosetta?
Just curious.
and good luck.

15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.
maybe thats the right occasion to temporarily simplifie your setup, instead of using thousands of plugins that, im sure, cost you a lot of money...register wrote:whoa! steady on guys.
Ok, so paying for universal upgrades is acceptable, but but to do it for every plugin and app I own will be of significant cost... And even still, not all my favorites have announced universal versions.
I'm sorry, I have to vote against ya........
It has been common knowledge that rosetta is a joke for ALL aplications tested .....for at least 2 to 3 months.
Actually, it must be longer because my macintel just turned 3 months old ( how the %#$%^ did that go by so fast), and I "tested" rosetta on imacs at comp usa prior to that.....if I remember correctly.

No man, it's not that we're sensitive, it's like... you were dissing the MacBook pro... really your post should've read:register wrote:I didn't blindly go out and buy a macbok all starry eyed. "Man, I didn't realise Rosetta would suck for audio work. Next time I'll do some research before buying a really expensive piece of hardware."
No one's having a go at you for having a go at the macbook, we're having a go at you for not tuning in to what the mac community has been rabidly discussing online for almost 12 months.
- hah whatever!I'd be pissed off if someone cussed some gear I'd spent so much on
It seriously is like buying a brand spanking new diesel car, then finding out when you got home that your local petrol station doesn't sell diesel. Instead of blaming the car, you should be blaming yourself for not doing your research.
I haven't bought a macbook pro. I'm not personally offended that you're "dissing it". That's just stupid.
If the software you need to use isn't in UB yet, then obviously you can't use a MBP for your daily audio work. So yeah, sell your macbook pro. Why didn't you ask this question on the forum if you weren't sure?
Probably because he feared getting 2+ pages of flames instead of a straight answer to his question.forgie wrote:If the software you need to use isn't in UB yet, then obviously you can't use a MBP for your daily audio work. In a nutshell, since the new macs use intel chips, and the old ones used powerpc, binaries written for the old macs won't run on the new ones (natively). Apple made a program called 'rosetta' which is basically a powerpc emulator that will enable the intel macs to run code written for powerpc. As with all emulators, however, performance can be a bit rough, depending on the nature of the app. Realtime audio probably isn't an area where you want to use it.plain wrote:Im not too infromed and have never used a mac. Can anyone explain the rosetta situation?
thanks for the info...i did not know at all....
im still making the switch...when they get universal binaries working well it's gonna be awesome..
so my next question is....just because an app is UB..it doesn't mean it will utilize duo core support?
if live 6 utilizes duo core support..does that mean every app running under it will have a boost...or each app has to be written to take advantage of it?
