Well at the Apple Store yesterday, I downloaded the Live 3.0 demo and installed it on a new iBook G4 800 w/ 256 RAM running Panther.
256MB is not really enough RAM for good performance in OSX, especially Panther. I bought a new 1GHz 15" G4 AlBook, and until my 1GB of RAM arrived, it struggled to run any audio apps smoothly. This is because vertual memory is always on in OSX, and without enough RAM your Hard Drive is getting hit by the system constantly. Now that I've swapped out the original 256MB for 1GB, everything runs significantly better. I just purchased LIVE, so I don't have the old demo arrangement to run numbers for machine, but if there is somewhere to download it...

should be in the folder "content" and then you see demo arrangement.
I agree that memory is crucial part of a fast system..everything runs through it..

briggity + claudek:
Thanks for clarifying that ram helps so much. I have been planning an ibook purchase for a long while, and was really saddened by the results referred to at the top of this thread. It seems it's not quite so bad.
Cheers,
e.

it is not that bad at all, concidering I'm on a G4 1000 Tower 704 ram and getting only 8 % more than a Ibook G4 800..For about 1100 Euro it is a good road machine..just max the RAM OUT.

FWIW, on my G3 800mhz iBook with 640mb Ram, I get 32% running the demo arangement in os9. I would think that a G4 would give you significantly better performance.

As I said in many posts before, the G4 processor really does NOTHING for Live. Only the Mhz help a bit..As Live is not Altivec Optimized, the G4 processor is not being used any different than in the G3..Shame isn't it!!!
I could imagine if Live was Altivec G4 Optimized..You would see a bigger difference in programs like Logic 5-6 or Photoshop which are optmized for use of the G4..Seems OS9 is still faster is some retrospecs, but i'd still use OSX for stablity any day.
Maybe Ableton one day will wake up to the fact most Mac users are using a G4 or higher these days..

claudek,
Ableton have already officially committed to optimizing G4 support in a future update... just search in the forum.

To my experience OS9 breaks away much faster under heavy duty than OSX. (Would say: in OSX you can push the performance indicator higher than in OS9)
And i think the CPU usage also depends on the latency - do not know - OS9 has a fixed one (if not using pro audio FW interfaces) of 11ms - on OSX I am running at 6ms. And with panther I get a usage between 34-36% on mellow (on 700 MHz iBook with buffers set to 254 samples). I can add an reverb (just tried the middle quality) and run up to 61-64% with mellow - no problems. (Jaguar is a bit slower: 35-37% and 64-67% respectively)
(Perhaps I have to mention that I am running from external disks - FWIW)
I think this is there area where OS9 is getting problematic. Can boot into OS9 - didn't do it for months.
