I have found that you can't group VSTs with live effects. You may only save groups that are made up of only Live plugins. If you do use some Live effects, that combine with a third party VST you can group all the live components, then
bring in the third party VST.
Not a clue how to make a skin, but I find that the 'metal' or is it 'steel' can;t remember off the top of my head is just perfect to work with. Don't waste your time creating new skins when you could be using Live for what it is made for. Just my opinion tho.
Well I hope that clarifies some stuff

If you use a chain / group of efx VST and native
put a dummy (empty) clip in one of the slots - then drag that clip over to your browser - name it vocal efx (or whatever) and you'll always have that group / chain
I do that a lot - I was running into the problem of having Ableton look for my samples when I'd save clips with samples in them but I learned you have to save the sample first
I don't know how to make a skin - but usually it's a product of semen, vaginal juice DNA and Chromosomes (sp?)

as for the 3rd question--you can save your template set that opens up every time you open live. thus you can save it with any effect and midi assignments you want. I also save lots of blank template sets for different bands and setups I use often--then I just open that blank set, rename it, and I'm off to the races...

when all the skin action was happening a few months ago - it seemed the official answer was along the lines of 'dont ask, don't tell'
ableton seems ok with people messing around with skin files as long as they don't publicize how they're doing it.
so, the official line is:
figure out how to do it on your own, or don't do it.
