You'd have to know Bob Moog's sense of humor. He did, after all, name a product line the Moogerfooger (as he used to say, say that word three times fast, and you'll know what it means).

another vote for the dave smith evolver, its dope. you wont find another synth that sounds like it, & you can use it as an effects box , giving your digital signals some analogue grit/warmth

maybe, but it still sounds way too much like a toddler line of clothes from phat farm. i mean, they have baby phat for infants, lil phatty could easily be for kids ages 3-6.

If for studio use, an analog gives a nice warmth to the mix, if on stage, a modern VA is more dependable, unless you crave analog and are willing to shell out $$$ for a nice serviced piece of ol' kit.
no prevailing genre of music:

they said the same thing when they tried to sell chevy novas to people in spanish speaking countries. (in spanish, no va = doesn't go). the name says a lot about a product. to me, this name sounds lame and thrown together. i'd rather not plunk down $1500 to find out if i was right or not.

Dave Smiths Evolver - This is about $550-600, but I think many here are familiar with it.

Umm two DCO's and Two Pure Digital Osc's + an Analog filter section etc does NOT = the analog real deal.

I am not refuting or denying the Power of an Evolver it's an awesome synth but I would describe it as an analog digital hybrid and not a real deal pure analog synth.
It is the simple fact that it isn't that makes it such a good sonic territory explorer IMHO.

another vote for the evolver...really versatile, can be used as an effects box (i use it a lot for processing field recordings), the analog-style sequencer is a great blopp-blooping riot and if it counts for anything, the support @ dave smith is probably the best i've ever experienced...

very true...

which is why you take your time during the initial build and keep things as "neat" as possible. This takes a lot of discipline (Iwas in such a hurry to get things done the temptation to just go "good enough" was great).

I've built the Soundlab - I love it.

I warn you though:
-it has a ton of wiring on the faceplate.
-Faceplate fabrication is a bitch (unless you wanna spend the money to get a pro to do it).
-to make it "useful" for what most of us are doing you'll have to do a lot of the "modifications" (particularly 1v octave scaling)

I encourage everyone here to at least consider going modular if they decide not to go the kit route (I'm a eurorack bigot so I'll stop here).

For a "standalone complete system" I say "check out the macbeth M5"
(it grabs the Voyager by the hair and pisses in it's mouth)
