laptop soundcard?

Post by stealth1 » Wed May 24, 2006 9:31 pm

I've been using an M-Audio firewire audiophile for about a year, but have recently had problems with the headphones cutting in and out or not working at all. Its been used heavily and so I'm looking for a new soundcard.

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem, but also what firewire audio interfaces everyone else is using.

I've looked at the Presonus firebox, but its a bit pricey at £250.

Any suggestions? Edirol, M-audio... :?

Please let me know

cheers

Sounds like you broke the headphone jack (it works/breaks when you wiggle the jack). Crack the thing open and hit the solder around the jack with a soldering iron. The key is to heat up the solder as well as the metal parts, 4-6 seconds should be OK.

I use an Echo Gina on my desktop and I'm still looking for one for my laptop, holding out for the new TC Electronics, I think.

Very happy with the Echo Indigo series. Amazingly portable, fantastic sound, dead-simple.

Anything from MOTU gets my vote as well, those dudes make solid shit.

I'm also thinking of getting an Audio Interface, either the Firebox or perhaps the Edirol FA 66. They are both within my budget.
VAKISWhat do you use the Firebox for and what do you think of it?
Cheers,

ps. I always thought a soundcard was what had to be jammed into a desktop.

MOTU question

Post by Shift » Thu May 25, 2006 9:22 am

rather than start yet another soundcard thread... does anyone have experience with the MOTU Ultralite? i run an ibook G4 800 & wonder if the Ultralite is too much soundcard for me? Does anyone know if it processor-intensive or not? Or if it's easily configurable so that I could disable some tracks to lighten the load if necessary?

I know I need a new laptop too, but I'm trying to wait until more apps/effects run smooth on the intel macs (and my wallet can actually take the hit) to upgrade my machine, but would like a soundcard i can grow into for the time being. the Presonus Firebox looks nice but I feel if I buy it I'd just end up selling it & wanting more later.

I use it for recording, like vocals or instruments.
But most for Dj work because if you want to prelisten the next song you need an audio card with more than 2 outs.
If you dont need to record any vocals or any other instrument and you need only to Dj with then get an EchoIndigo DJ card for about 199EURO.
I think the presonus firebox is good so far,and the thing is it is not expensive.
And the last thing is if you want only to produce music only with your computer with no external instruments then, you dont need to buy audio card(if you have a laptop computer)just use the internal audio card.I used to use the internal audio, not that bad,but i am on Mac dont know the quality of Pc audio card.

Thanks for the reply. I'm also using a Mac - G4 15".

How do you find the latency when prelistening to tunes in Live? I have heard that some audio interfaces can add a lot more to the CPU load.

Thanks again,
c

For me works fine,no latency.
About the cpu,it is truth some audio interfaces can eat a lot CPU.I tested the same projects with my presonus firebox and with the build in audio card,CPU stay the same.I am happy with the presonus.

Dude, checkit:

http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/CardB ... /index.php
or
http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/CardB ... /index.php

Echo totally supports Mac. In fact, the mac biz is probably more than 25-30% of their user base I would bet.

Yeah, it's solid, super friggin portable too. As long as you're running OS X (Jaguar, Panther or Tiger) you'll be fine. I highly recommend it.
