1 controller, 2 laptops
1 controller, 2 laptops
Soon I am going to gig with 2 laptops in stead of one.
This way I can preload the next song on the other laptop.
Is there a way to use 1 controller decently with 2 laptops??
I have a Novation SL. It has a usb connect and 2 midi outputs, but I'm not sure if I can use all three at the same time.
Anyway, my biggest fear is that both laptops start playing at the same time!!
grtz.

With the SL you can set which port each command gets sent out of, midi1, midi2, usb, all etc.
Maybe one template for lappie1, another for lappie 2, both templates have enough in common so you can x-fade or whatever.
I started a thread a week ago about syncing two PCs, people suggested syncing them from an external device or use MIDI-OX or something. Play with the synced lappies a bit, put the same song on both and listen to how they can drift, even if you don't change BPMs.

I think you can sync using midi over lan : )
Just connect one controller directly to laptop number one, and need cross net wire, for conect laptop 1 to laptop 2, and some software like ipmidi.
You can find multiple free software for send and recive midi over lan.
Its really great way, because if your laptops have lan , you can connect multiple machines using just lan switch + lan wires : )

why not just use specific midi channels for each laptop?
maybe that's too much work though.
but you could have laptop A respond only to MIDI channels 1-8 and laptop B respond only to channels 9-16.
or something.
maype each laptop responding to one channel only would be a better idea.
or buy (or make) a hardware MIDI one in, two out switch. so yo ujust flip a switch depending on which laptop you want to control?
