New version of Mixed In Key (Harmonic DJ Software), Mac OS X

Post by djyakov » Tue Jun 06, 2006 1:39 am

Dear All,

Mixed In Key for "Mac OS X" is now available! Mixed In Key is a Windows and Mac OS X Harmonic Mixing application that finds the musical key of songs for musicians and professional DJs. Mixed In Key helps users mix songs harmonically, with no clashing vocals and harmonic elements. This program has been downloaded by over 10,000 DJs since it's release.

Here is our full Windows version:

Nice to see that you keep taking your software further. Keep up the good work!
A little about myself in this thread after Sales Dude McBoob asked for more information after reading my signature at the time after I started a stupid thread: http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic. ... ht=#295839

I've been using the demo by passing a WAV from the Mac over the network to a PC running the demo.

It works great! The OSX version will certainly be a lot easier for me to use.

Hello,

Mixed In Key version 2.0 for Windows is coming very soon. We are beta-testing the full version now. Version 2.0 includes automatic BPM detection, audio CD analysis and much faster performance for large collections. We tweaked many things behind the scenes as well. Full feature list will be posted closer to release.

Will you please let us know if you have any other questions?

Will it be possible after a scan to get the prg to auto add the bpm & key info to the mp3 or wav name?

Im really impressed with it so far, been very accurate.

Has the Key detection been improved in the new version?

From the last results I saw on MixingOnBeat
(http://www.mixingonbeat.com/phpbb/viewt ... 829ec61d27)
Rapid Evolution - RE2 (www.mixshare.com) was way better and is free....

It seems that MixedInKey was at the bottom of the list...

Would love to give the Mac version a try... any news on a demo?

Yes, this feature is available in Version 2.0 for Windows.

Yakov is a Russian name, it is the same name as Jacob.

Mixed In Key will report identical results in all versions. It reports accurate results and enables DJs to mix harmonically. Algorithm gets improved ever year.

We are currently working with the algorithm developer to improve the quality of results if there is indeed a noticable difference between Mixed In Key and other programs. Qualia, the developer of MixShare, has been very forthcoming with providing files for analysis. The goal of both programs is to make harmonic mixing easier, we just take a different approach to programming. MixShare is written in Java, Mixed In Key is written in Microsoft .NET and Mac OS X Cocoa. We encourage people to try both programs to find out which program works best for them.

Hi,

Mixed In Key team is working on the Windows version and is improving the full Mac OS X version. Due to our time constraints, there are no immediate plans to release a free version for Mac OS X. We want to spend that time working on full version features instead.

Thank you,
Yakov

Slightly OT, but only slightly...

I use Serato and saw that you actually need to have key lock activated to benefit from the Mixed In Key software, but Serato doesn't have this feature (yet) and the Master Tempo functions on CD players cannot be used when the Serato Code CD's are inserted.

Can you sort some doubts for me please?

(sorry to post this here, but there are no real posts on the Serato board + a couple of users here have Serato as well)

Hi John,

Most DJs agree that harmonic mixing sounds good if you're staying within 2% tempo change. A small change in tempo will still sound great. You can mix a 128 BPM song with a 130 BPM song with no problem. Just beatmatch them and don't worry about it.

Additionally, changing the tempo by 6% moves the key up one semi-tone. You can play song A at 0% tempo and song B at +6% tempo. As long as they are compatible after song B is pitched up 6%, it will sound great too.

To give a real-world example:

Eric Prydz - Call On Me at 126 BPM and Late Night Alumni - Empty Streets at 128 BPM. If they are harmonically compatible, beatmatching and mixing will sound great although their tempos are slightly different. Human ears can't tell a small difference.

6% example:

Eric Prydz - Call On Me at 126 BPM and Shane 54 - Equinoxe at 134 BPM. In this case, Shane 54's song is roughly 6% faster than Eric Prydz.

This mix will be harmonic if Eric Prydz (+6%) is compatible with Shane 54 at his original tempo. When you change tempo, you transpose the key.

Playing Eric Prydz at +6% (133.56 BPM) with Shane 54 at 134 BPM could be compatible!

Rule of thumb to remember: When you pitch up a tune by 6%, it goes up 1 semitone. When you pitch down a tune by 6%, it goes down 1 semitone. It doesn't matter what tempo you pick, 6% rule is always reliable.

Does this help?

Thanks,
Yakov
