what is the correct procedure to set in & out buffer siz

hi there
I use the gnx4 straight into my laptop
talking about latency - what is the best way to determine how much buffer you need in input and output?
the whole mechanism is not clear to me,,
what value shall I put into the white box in the "overall latency" line?
and also...is the latency of my system the overall one or just the one that I put into the white box?
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN ME THE CORRECT PROCEDURE??
