I tried a 4-6 pin firewire cable, same results. I can't play a measure of music without the audio dropping out for a moment. So throwing another $100 at the problem did nothing, this thing has to go back, bummer.

Whatever I get I'm going to try it in the store first and it will be USB. If it comes down to it I'll forego bus power, it's just another load on the battery along with the Remote SL25, for a 90 minute session, not really worth it, I guess.

I might as well just start burning 100 dollar bills.

I don't think that's correct - there are devices out there that need more than the 500 milliAmps the USB bus provides.

I searched high and low because I couldn't believe that none provide power--sad to say that it seems to be true, but I'd loved to be proved wrong.

I've been using a M-Audio Ozonic firewire device into my laptop via a four pin connection. Bus power is not an issue as I am happy to power it using the supplied adapter.

However, I find that the Ozonic randomly gets "lost" and I have to power down and reboot the laptop in order to reconnect and get things back up and running. In many ways the Ozonic is a great device but this has become really annoying and I'm even considering reverting to my older Edirol UA20 USB1 interface (which is not such good quality audio, and of course doesn't offer the keybaord, etc).

Is there any way of running a firewire device (including alternatives) on a four-pin connection without this issue?

Do you use original power supply.? They are bad and unusable. M audio exchanged it for the one used for 410 and since then it deactivated maybe twice in 6 months.
They should exchange it free of charge, German M audio knows the case they were supposed to fwd it toHQ in October of last year, if they did dont know. Sold my Ozonic last sunday on Ebay, huge loss of money, great win of peace of mind and any other kind.
Dont want to see, hear whtever M audio ever again.

Thanks - so you're saying the power adapter is at fault here? If so I will contact them regarding an exchange.

Sounds like you have had a tough time with them!

Cheers

The wasted their money, my and theirs time sending Ozonic there and back few times just to find out there was nothing wrong but the design fault of the PSU- it is just too weak and that automatic 120/220 V does not suit the purpose here.
The problem is , they are not bad people but very bad professionals.
They didnt find out , I did accidently while plugging in my cellular s charger! Before that I reinstalled OS like 2-3 times tried all kind of FW cables, answered a lot of idiotic questions.....let me forget all that.....

I think that in the UK we probably use a different PSU from the one you have in Germany, but as the problem appears to be the same perhaps the rating of the PSU is just not sufficient (I see this with keyboard pupils of mine all the time when the shop sells them the wrong adapter!). I will phone M-A and seek their advice... it would be great to have this silly issue with the Ozonic sorted!

Cheers again!

I've been using the firebox for a while now, and it's never let me down. I had the same saga as you (I have a 4-pin on the laptop, got the pcmcia card only to find out it didn't power it) but all I do is plug the ac cord into the wall and play.

I'd give the card a little more tinkering, it's a great card!!

I have a pcmcia card with firewire at work with a jack for a power supply, it powers up the firewire ports. I will post the brand when I get into work tommorow for you.
