click the midi learn in the upper right corner
click the on/off button on the effect that you want to control.
press desired controller on your controller.
turn midi learn off.
voila'

if you want to have toggle buttons (ie press down for 'on' release for 'off') so you don't have to hit the buttons twice, you can use the enigma editing software for your midi controller and set the key to be a midi cc instead of a notw on off. it's a lot handier for things like bit redux and beatrepeat.

I have done this and the button only works if on Ableton it is set to off. Example the Track Activator on Channel 1 if I turn it off by clicking on it with my mouse I can turn it on with the button assigned on X-Session but cannot turn it back off using the same button. How do I change this so I can toggle on and off with the 1 button?

Cheers

Download Enigma software from http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.enigma
Load it up and create a program on preset 1 lets, say(DON'T LAUNCH LIVE). Then, you have to click on one of the buttons with your cursor and enter 147 on the Ctrl Parameter. That's a Note On/Off. That will work with your midi toggle. Click the button on the top with the double pointing right arrow. Exit Enigma. Recall your Preset again from X-Session. Fire up Live and assign that button to the on/off switch of your effect. Hope it works :)
