does m audio make a decent interface or sound card

i want to use pro tools m powered.
after reading reviews on the m box 2 and its latency issues i decided i dont want it. i do want pro tools but i cant have latency over 2ms because i will be recording guitar. since i will be recording guitar i kinda want something with an instrument input.
btw, i know what products m audio carry so im really only wanting suggestions from people who own one of them.

well actually I've had the FW410 for a couple of years now and it's never given me a problem. I actually like it.

Fast Track Pro. Not a whole lot of bells and whistles but very easy to use and very reliable.

I would most agree the M-Audio Firewire 410 is a kicking unit, does everything I need from home studio, to live performance when together with Live the setup GUI is very intuitive and makes your life so much more easier than other products on the market. When you performing you don't want to have a confusing system. You just want the unit to work.

The mic/instrument canon xlr plugs on the front gives you easy access; when plugging in your guitar. With low latency I doubt you will have any problems with the 410.

Only thing is with Firewire you CAN NOT hot swap (unplug the firewire cable) when powered and connected to the computer. To turn off the sound card after you have shut down you computer or risk blowing your firewire port.

a. I am very pleased (as others on THIS forum will be) that others have had success with the fw410. I didn't

b. Yes, the mbox can be very annoying in the latency deparment. Here's a STONE-COLD fact, if you can use a higher sample rate......latency automatically get's better.
One huge problem with the mbox is it's usb 1.1, which means an absolute max of 24/48, which is going to require a really low buffer size, which can open up a another can of worms in the way of problems..........which isn't going to satisfy allot of people. So fw rules in this area.

c. With maudio, It seems I keep hearing that there is a "texas instruments" chip that is really good for fw interface.....anything else is dicy. If you can get something that is "TI" for your fw interface, that seems to help.

i have the fast track pro, and the mixing into Live is great but when i want to hear the mix from live, there's a annoying techno-type sound over the mix (and i am not mixing techno). i have tried everything from better cords to re loading the fast track pro.

I've had my firewire audiophile for nearly 2 years and its never given me any trouble. Reasonably priced for what it is and sturdy, with good overall performance. Can't fault it, except it doesn't have 3/4" jack connections

If you want to go M-Powered, why not go dirt cheap? If you're planning on using a desktop/tower as opposed to a laptop machine you can buy an M-Audio PCI card interface. M-Powered Pro Tools is compatible with all M-Audio PCI cards. I used a Delta 10/10 for years and it was solid as a rock and had ultra low latency. You can find a new M-Audio Audiophile 24-Bit/96kHz 4 Input / 4 Output PCI card for just under $100 if you look around.

Get that, the M-Powered software, and a cool little mixer like the Soundcraft / Spirit COMPACT 4 ($99), and you'll have a nice little Pro Tools rig.

actually, i consider the entry level PCI audiophile cards the 2496 and 192, CONSIDERING THE MONEY YOU PAY FOR!! as one of, if not the best value for money sound equipment item ever made. they sound simply stunning for that kind of "el cheapo" cards.

the firewire and usb devices i can't recommend from M-audio, though.

2ms? That's a little excessive, yes?

I have a FW 1814 @ 24\96 and 5ms is plenty for guitar in my opinion.

Good shout. Although I use a FW Audiophile now for mobile use with my lappy I used to have a 1010lt and also found it as good as gold. 2nd hand prices are almost too tempting....
