Linking two of the same controller

Post by Nic Synaes » Mon Jun 26, 2006 8:20 pm

Through an accident of flatmate and I ordering the same thing without telling each other we have two M-Audio X-Session controllers for Ableton. Now we want to reach the obvious next level: two linked to one laptop, but when you plug both in, Ableton only recognises one, so the knobs just get doubled up on each controller - anyone know if it is possible to stop this?

Somebody just recently posted a utility here that allows you to take any kind of incoming info midi or not and retranslate it for use by programs like Live. Forgot the name but it might just be the thing.

If I recall though it was almost $100 American and Mac only.

How about simply using two different midi channels with it?

Nah. That'd be to simple.

OK, so at the risk of a flaming - HOW? I have very little experience of MIDI controllers, only having got one recently... help!

No need for flaming, Nic - we've all been newbies at one point :)

Please start out by reading through the manual for it... if it's anything like the uc33 manual there will be an "advanced guide" or something that will talk you through how to change the midi channel on one of the units.

Alternatively simply try out a few different presets, and hope that you can find two with no overlaps?

Sorry still not there - NO help in the manual, or the website. I've assigned both controllers to different channels in the Midi/Sync preferences, but Ableton still only seems to recognise one controller, meaning if I assign, say, knob 1 on controller 1 to master volume, then try to assign button 1 on controller 2 to track 1 volume - it says that button is already assigned to master volume - this is driving me barmy, I'm sure it's obvious but I just can't get it :-(

you can't do it from midi/sync preferences. You have to do it directly on the midi controller. I can't talk you through it because I don't have one in front of me, but it is outlined in the manual.

Did you try switching presets on one controller? Do they all output the same controller values? Have you managed to edit anything on the controllers themselves?

that sounds like it might well be what I'm doing wrong... But I am still getting a couple of problems with the actual set up. I'll try playing with the presets in the controllers and get something that allows this to work - then presumably I can set my own configuration up for each controller separately and save them as defaults on it, then link both and use the stored defaults... well let's see if it's that easy! Thansk for the help
