pop music recommendations

Post by Benshik » Tue Jun 27, 2006 11:49 am

Hi guys
maybe because this is summer, but these days id like to discover new artists/bands that produce "creative" music that is still pop, melodic and enjoyable...
for example, stuff like gonzales, zoot woman, stereototal, jamie lidell, etc etc etc

any suggestions?
cheers

Ben

I just picked up "The Good Listeners" album "Ojai". Excellent stuff, you should check them out.

Gnarls Barkley - sounds very summer(y) popish

Oakenfold's got a new artist album - he's not much of a dance music producer anymore so it's probably on the pop tip

1979, XTC, "Millions" and "That is the way", from the album "Drums and Wires".
The rest of the album is so so (of course there is the hit "Making plans for Nigel", and the interesting "Snipping Man", but the two above mentioned tracks are pure genius, in my opinion. Excellent guitars from Andy Partridge. And this is great "experimental pop", way before Radiohead and others, and without the painful teenage spirit burden, and great british humour on top of it. And a deliciously horrendous album cover.

some nice suggestions here!

i'd also like to add Psapp and Architecture in Helsinki...
sometimes it gets even a little too sweet but i like the creative use they make of different instruments...

try and find some stuff by win. they were around at the end of the 80's and made some of the best pop music i have ever heard. they made 2 albums, uh! tears baby and freaky trigger.
i grew up with those albums and uh! tears baby is still one of my all time favourites
