yes, but if I am going to do video it will be video created in real-time , not video clips with effects on them. I thought you knew me well enough to suss that

OK... do it the hard way then!

There are generative video apps that create video on the fly. They tend to be hippie-abstract globs of morphing protoplasm, though.

You don't HAVE to re-invent the wheel, you know! (I have a feeling you will, though, and it will be a rounder one...)

I just want a cool way of displaying my midi notes with a projector - shouldn't be too hard for a hack like me. I think I *will* go for a visual machine!

Engineering the stuff yourself is the best way to progress, imo. *he said to the guy midi-controlling his fog machine, strobes and cameras*

I think the new Macs with the intel chips will offer more options. I plan on running two laptops and a regular dj mixer(which ever one is at the club). That way the traveller and the two laptops can fit in my carry on. going to be kinda heavy but i really like the whole EQing of djing and want to incorporate that into my sets. plus two laptops just opens up more options.

since i already have a g4, ill probably buy a mac laptop with the intel chip(whatever they are going to name it) when it comes out. that way any vst's that cant run on macs ill just run off the 2nd laptop.

ANYONE THINKING ABOUT BUYING AN APPLE HOLD OFF. The g4's and g5's are soon to be history.

i use my old powerbook as a reaktor beatbox with all the groove boxes, play along with what's going on in live set (on PC) till i find something i like, then just send it in as audio. i don't even synch the two machines, because i find the tempo is sufficiently consistent for my purposes (they might drift over a minute or somesuch, even if dialed into same tempo, but i'm only recording a loop of a bar or two). sometimes i'll bring audio into the reaktor book to mess around with, send it back out as audio, etc. very primitive, but very low maintenance, very dependable. and if the PC crashes, i can still make some noise while i sort that out.

you might wanna look at Quartz Composer for live interactive programmed visuals synced to Midi.. runs off your video card, very fast and you can incorporate all kinds of jitter style stuff, but a lot simpler i reckon..

the only thing I'll say is, DEFINITELY set it up so you can have Live open on both machines - even if you're using video - then use rewire or something, but I dont believe in our lifetimes there will be a computer that is crashproof, so having another computer with Live open is a far cooler backup than CDS so I would personally definitely not pass up the chance to have Live on a decent machine as a backup
