Recording Problem (Not a bug)

Post by Zack Flash » Thu Jun 29, 2006 4:13 am

I have a recording problem that I am hoping someone has experienced before and may be able to recognize it and provide a solution

Gear: Line6 TonePort UX2, Ableton Live 5.2, Gibson Les Paul.

Earlier today I wrote my very first song, I did the Drums, Rhythm Guitar and then I did the Lead Guitar track, everything sounded fine while recording each track.

Then, when all was complete, I did a playback and I could hear some terrible noise which sounds to me like a Chorus Echo Analog unit with Delay and a touch of static. Notes are repeating them self at a very quick rate.

Upon closer inspection, I found the noise to be isolated to the Lead Guitar track, all the other tracks sound great with the Lead track muted.

I tried switching effects, I tried going in clean without any effects, I tried switching cables and nothing I did could remove the static noise.

What I don't understand, is why the lead sounds good while recording. I don't notice the anomaly until I do a playback of the newly recorded track.

I also took a look at the .wav file with a wave editor, independently of Live and it is unusable.

Any ideas?

Frustrated by my ignorance. I like this product.

same as : http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41193

try increasing your buffer size in Live preferences:Audio. If you have an audio interface with ASIO drivers, increase the buffer size in the control panel for your audio hardware.

Thank you, I will increase the buffer size and report the results back here for others.

Any idea what average size the buffer should be?

Thanks everyone, it was the buffer size, I was able to get the LEAD track down.

A new problem popped up.

When rendering to disk, Ableton is omitting the Rhythm Guitar track.

Hmmm...more hair pulling coming up, haha.

is the rhythm guitar track's mute/enable button automated? because if it is, there's your problem.

I got it to render all tracks now.

I am not completely out of the woods yet though. The sound being recorded is still not exactly the same as is being played though.

For whatever thing I am doing incorrectly, it is causing a slight warbling of my notes, like they are being vibrated or is an echo. It's wierd.

Back to the manual....

arggghhhhhh

Thanks for all your help everyone.

I think I have everything just about sorted out now.

Here it a link if you want to hear it.

I did all the tracks myself but please be kind, I've only been playing guitar for about 8 months now and I know there are still some timing issues and small mistakes to iron out.

I have a friend coming in on Thursday to put down the Bass track.

I started this to have a backing track to practice scales, so my lead guitar is really me just dickin' around.
