Clarification please on dual cores

Post by Jeroen » Thu Jun 29, 2006 3:53 am

Hi all,

I am a bit confused by some of the discussion in the topics.
First, I understand that there is an expectation that Live 6 will be optimized for dual core machines, which is great. Where is the official statement on this topic?

Now, I assume this will be equally valid for the new intel core duo, dual core centrino, dual core athlons, or dual core pentiums, yes or no? (BTW, what is the official name of the intel CPUs that apple uses?)

So, the new mac book pros have high quality dual core CPU. Why start people comparing that with pentium performance. it seems that for laptops the MPB is a great deal, but a performance comparison would be between a dual core a al MPB and a dual core pentium or athlon.

Do people have good experience using dual cores pentiums and athlons for music production?

Now, if the current dual core in the MPB is focused at laptop performance, would you not expect Apple to come out with a high end replacement of the G5 soon if they want to be considered in that market as well. It feels a bit strange that the current Apple dual core mini is probably the high end of the max series.

Any views, corrections on the above, appreciated ...

Yes. It's called Intel® Core™ Duo.
mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.

stupid name

Post by Jeroen » Thu Jun 29, 2006 1:05 pm

Thanks for clarification,

Think its a bit of a stupid name for a dual processor - core duo, a bit too generic. Still wonder how important this optimization will be if people use plug-ins and rewire apps anyway. With multiple CPUs or dual cores you probably already have benefit from these dual cores. But just guessing I am not familiar how all this is actually programmed.

well what do you expect from the most common/generic CPU provider? an underground name like 'h4x 4 4bl3t0n l1v3 cpu' won't go down too well with board of directors and marketing.

think of it this way... a normal P4 is a club with one big room, you can have all kinds of music but as a business if you want to be efficient and manage your crowd well, you would have a club with two rooms so if one feels too busy, they can go to the emptier room.

the p4 cpu's get sent instructions which are fed into the cpu one at a time, but on a dual cpu system, if a piece of instruction gets sent to a cpu and it is too busy to handle it at that point, it will be sent to the other cpu.
