I wanna jam with the big boys

What i would like to be able to do is for instance take a song by another artist and chop out all the instruments exept for the drums. I know how to insert a song into the live program and alter it, But how do you take layers off of it. Dont worry I want to do this for private study purposes only. 8O

you cant take layers out of already recorded music unless you have access to the original multitrack master.

Emef is correct, so the best you can do with a finished, 2-track master is:

- Mult a few instances of the original. Use the 4 - band eq to do frequency cuts to remove whatever you can without removing too much of what you want.

- You can set up sends from the cut tracks to new tracks with different EQ and compression to further bring back to life the sounds you do want.

- Also if you can find sections of the original that are less busy, you can sample those and re-arrange / add in your new parts.

That is how I do remixes of artists I produce sometimes; however most of the time I have the raw, individual mono or stereo tracks (like vox, bass, synth1, arp, etc) that I can just bring into Live.
