korgpadkontrol and ableton

Post by enthawizeguy » Mon Jun 12, 2006 1:38 am

Alright so i got ableton and the korg padkontrol today. I have been watching the dvd tutorial but am having trouble figuring out how to get the pads to be recognized in ableton. Also how do i assign samples to each pad? I selected the ableton scene through the korg and usually when i select other scenes its fine but for ableton it lights up all the pads at once and they stay like that unless you switch scenes? anyways if someone could help me out or im me, it would be greatly appreciated. I am switching from my mpc to ableton and if anyone has any tips that would please a mpc drum freak let me know as well. Like quantization of individual drum sounds, cutting off samples etc.

Thanks

Seems like the Ableton scene has the pads assigned to CC values instead of the correct note range you need for impulse. Just open the software editor (I can't figure out how to toggle the pads from CC to notes without using the software) & make a new template instead, with 8 of the pads set to send the "white key" notes from C3-C4.

just keep turning the main selection knob. Once you pass the highest note value (g9) it will change to assigning CC values instead.

My pK is sending note values an octave lower than what I program it to. What setting did I foul up?

John Sweet - so does mine!

Interestingly, so does one of my Electribes. Wonder if it's a Korg thing?

You can change the note assignments, midi channel, and padKontrol channel in the Editor. I have two MIDI tracks, with channel A assigned to one and Channel B assigned to the other, on midi channel 10. Assign channel A to the lower 8 pads, assign channel B to the upper 8 pads, and you have all 16 pads covered. (set the pads to begin on C4 - C5 (C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C) for each double row, or use a pitch utility to raise the pitches +24. (I use a scene to define the pad)

I define these as instruments, and call the tracks (10 Pad A. 1- Pad B)

If you need more sounds, you can use another scene(s), and assign all 16 pads to channel 11, etc., using two more midi tracks in ableton.
Then fill with your own drum samples (I store the ones I use in the Ableton Waveform folder), and define each Impulse as a separate instrument..

It all works beautifully; I just wish the LED would show the scene name (which I save/retrieve from HD), rather than "5.0.3", etc.... (5.0.1 is for DR-008 scene, and 5.0.2 is to key clips.....)

That's my take; any other approaches?
