A couple of freebies:

If you'r into retro stylke Floydy sounding string synth sounds check out CrazyDiamons

http://www.music-boss.com/freeware_plug ... amonds.htm

For a beutiful litle mellotron VST check out Tapeworm

http://www.tweakbench.com/instruments.php?id=6

(I love tweakbench stuf)

And there is a top class analogue string sound in Plugsound Free (well worth a download. It only contains 29 sounds but with fully tweakable filters, lfo modulation and reverb you can create a lot of variations on them)

Reaktor Steam is pretty cool for natural sounds.

The flutes and bells presets are nice.

Check out the demo for Tone 2's Firebird

Not exactly natural, but not overworked samples or outrightly cheesy...

Holy jeez that tweakbench stuff is amazing. Not just the strings, but everything.

Is there ANYTHING like that for the mac?

I like the sound of the strings in Spectrasonics Atmosphere. They are kind of layers with other nice noises.
