as far as David Lynch goes, I often find them 'trying to be different' , but I think Straight Story is a fantastic movie. Certainly not a hollywood blockbuster, but not directed at a chin stroking Media studies crowd either.quandry wrote:David Lynch is a great director, the flicks are dark and different than the average hollywood crap, check out:
Mulholland Drive
Lost Highway
Elephant Man
one friend of mine said that he would bring Lost highway around to watch, but before it started he wanted to present a prepared hour long talk about its meaning and structure. give me break!
word, I hear ya. I guess for me, I got so intrigued and bewildered by Mullholland drive and Lost Highway and their non-linear storytelling structure that I did all sorts of net researched and was amazed at some of the things written about these movies by scholarly people referencing all sorts of physchology, philosophy, art, etc. Rarely, if ever, does a movie intrigue me enough to go searching for more meaning online.Angstrom wrote:as far as David Lynch goes, I often find them 'trying to be different' , but I think Straight Story is a fantastic movie. oh yeah David Lynch is a weird guy - my old housemate years ago bought the complete twin peaks and we watched the whole lot - and it was actually MORE confusing watching it all togetherquandry wrote:word, I hear ya. Eraserhead would make the less emotionally stable go on a small animal killing rampage - that movie was intentionally horrible - like one whole feature length fingernails down a blackboard show
I had that with Lost highway as well.. gave up on it. Straight Story was *really* amazing to watch, and Mulholland Drive didn't work for my wife, but definitely for me - takes me back to the spooky weird later episodes of Twin Peaks (the good ones, imo)Angstrom wrote:as far as David Lynch goes, I often find them 'trying to be different' , but I think Straight Story is a fantastic movie. yeah, Eraserhead totally freaked out my wife. I think that Lynch is a master of using sound as a means of suspense/terror--the score to eraserhead is totally unsettling but not in an in-your-face way. I think it is pretty cool that a film without any serious blood and guts, swearing, or "r-rated" content can be so unsettling and.forge wrote: oh yeah David Lynch is a weird guy - my old housemate years ago bought the complete twin peaks and we watched the whole lot - and it was actually MORE confusing watching it all together

+1 on the donnie darko--that movie is really intruiging.
