how do you make build ups?

Post by CarrieAnna » Tue Jul 11, 2006 4:48 am

Hi there!

The only thing I've done is decrease or increase the transpose option for the sample and I've tried to chop up some beats to make a build up (but it doesn't sound right). Any pointers or tips? I would greatly appreciate it as I feel it is so essential especially with drum n bass tunes.

Thanks & take care.

build up... u mean in the context of progression... such as for example the snare roll and the reverse cymbal type of build up right???? well if thats what u ask it's all bout the midi grid where u program everything using different grids ya know 8,16,32 etc well that's where u break it down don't forget to play with ur velocities on ur parts... it can create dramatic effects if used creatively adds tension or create a sense of tranquility all with the different velocities and note lentghs. play with it don't be afraid to experiment whats the worst that can happen???
dont think too much just do it... lates

i like taking a pad witha long release hit the note so it fades over say 4 bars, record in as audio, then simply reverese it to the point you want to break at... same goes with pitched down snares/ or crashes with long tail reverbs , bounce in then reverse. i might also add a more complex hat pattern on the build, more ghost hits, open the filter on my bassline ( suprisingly good on a build up) , if i have pads or synths ill maybe lengthen the release, and filtered wooshy white noise is ace too. Basically anything to create more energya and chaos, especially with drum and bass.

If youve not been yet check out dogs on acid / the grid - is a superb production forum aimed at drum & bass...

Hey, thanks for the information. Looks like I have some big time learning to do. I'll send an update with some sound if I figure it out (it's really what my tunes are lacking right now). Thanks again & much appreciated!
