Wow. I have been reading this forum all day at work-something I have never done before. I got most of the excitement out of my system by reading others post the same things (both sides) that I was thinking. The price breakdown/comparison to Logic 7 is very interesting to me. What comes down to though, is ableton deserves the right to make money on their hard work, rather than just doing charity work.
Apple can undercut all it wants. However small it is compared to microsoft, it is still a scary monster. Live has done something specifically different here. They have officially become peddlers.
A lot of us see these new features as bug-fixes. Junkies always want more.
Initially I would not say that the Abe's were on the darkside of the force. The simply devloped a product that satisfied a serious need. That was good. Now, however, they have strategically created an artificial need, ie: Sampler.
Given the option of marketing the Movie feature or the Sampler as an EXTRA, Sampler makes a lot more sense. Sampler does seem to be very much it's own unique entity. The thing is, as Henke has identified in past interviews, the compulsion to make electronic music is often paired with an irrational addiction. I will now drop the peddler metaphor, however, because in all reality, this is just by-the-textbook marketing. The Sampler so perfectly integrates into the continuity of the Ableton work environment, that psychologically we are compelled to intellectually expand our interaction with the environment (ie: piss on the tree.)
Well. judging by my post count, you better believe I'm gonna piss on this tree! Live is doing all sorts of things that I single-handedly will never get max to be able to do. And, while I pity the fact that I am going to drop even more cash after not publishing my first max patch yet, it seems that in some ways the abes have intuitively read my mind.
The only way any of us are going to be free of the lure of such sexy beasts as the Sampler, and their wonderful world is by clearly defining what their goals as an individual are, and learning how to most independently achieve them.
In this case I can justify the aquisition of Sampler because it looks like it could eat Logic's Sculpture Kraggen-style. That and yes, we are all very familiar with Live's work flow.
Face it- If we want it, it is worth the money. We know the abes are at the top of the game, and we know that they have been REALLY quiet for a long time. This sh%t is gonna be chronic, and i will be released right around the time that there will be reliable computers to represent it on! No more of this "I'm on OSX so I can only get 3 instances of reverb."
It's gonna be expensive, but with dual cores, and the omnipotent powers with which we will receive, between our new computers, new features, and this exciting sound-desgn tool- it will only be a question of each of our own character and foci, if the cost is worth it.
This is why I go to school and work, both full-time. Because I like having what I decide I need. So do ableton. That's why I have a feeling they have decided to shape the future again. Damn I love 'em.
