which drive optimizer/defragment program for OSX

Question about carbon copy:

Can I copy a system drive to available space on an external firewire, that already has other things on it? I.E. my system drive is 30 Gigs, I have a 120 Gig back up drive with plenty of space. Can I make a copy to that drive that is bootable?

Thank you very much Sunless. I live in a pretty rural area on the Australian coast so forums like these are so helpful. Up until a year and a half ago I was using hardware samplers/sequencers and synths. This PowerBook is the first computer I've really ever used. So much time and love (creating music) is spent on this machine that I just want to be safe. loosing songs would be a nightmare.

Thanks for a great post, sunless! I think I'll go with Carbon Copy Cloner for this G5. I have set the machine up with two internal drives and one external firewire800 drive. First internal drive is for system, programs and the "home folder" containing my working documents. The second internal drive is devided into two partitions, one for sample and loop library and one for regular backing up of my OSX home folder, performed by the excellent utility Déjaà Vu that is part of OSX.

All music projects are recorded into dedicated project folders on the firewire drive. Besides all original sound files I also save song documents from Live and Logic into this folder. When a project is completed I save both from Logic and Live as "self contained" projects into the project folder. This will copy all files used for looping in Live or by the EXS24 Logic sampler. Finally I burn the project folder to two different DVDR. Saving projects "self contained" is nice because you can bring up the project on any computer without needing access to your personal sample/loop library.

Yes. Click on the Preferences button in CCC to write to a Disk Image.

Do not check "Make usable for Apple System Restore". This is a Mac OS 9 image restore tool. The image you get will be "corrupt" if you want a OS X bootable image.

You'll get a sparse image file as your output. This will be a single file containing a bootable image -- i.e. you can apply this image to a second hard drive with CCC and boot from it.

My external drive is not partitioned and now has only audio on it. If I want to copy my system drive/partition from my PowerBook to the external drive do I have to partition that drive?

Repartitioning means reformatting the drive. You can make an image of your PB hard drive without reformatting the external drive.
